The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

That’s really bad given they were the last large publisher to not be owned by someone in Japan. Also Media Do are very fond of using AI for translations, so that’s not going to be good… 😬
Looks like the staff weren't informed either, Seven Seas had a panel at Citruscon an hour before this broke and the introduction still stated that they are the biggest independent manga publisher😬

Wow a good 2/3 of my collection is 7s so this might be annoying going forwards. I imagine the next 12~18 we'll see a gradual transition towards a more Media Go way of working. At what point ???

Maybe pessimistic but after Rightstuf and Manga written exactly like this. And history of Media do. Well ..

That sucks. Seven Seas have released a lot of stuff I like. Some ongoing like Soara and the House of Monsters and some that have finished already.

Media Do is making reference to wanting to increase their output and that is a complete misreading of the company. Seven Seas arguably publishes and licenses too much already. They haven’t reprinted Soara Volume 1 in ages (making it impossible to start the series if you’re interested), Homunculus is out of print, Monster Musume was one of their big titles but the single volumes are scattershot. Decreasing the quality of their releases to release even more product is the exact opposite of what they need to be doing at this point.

Shogakukan are getting hounded from all directions with multiple mangaka removing their works from their Manga One app after it was discovered that an artist was rehired under a different pen name who previously had a work cancelled due to him sexually assaulting one of his students.

It has since come to light that the author of Act Age, who received an 18 month prison sentence for upskirting minors was also hired under a new pen name.

God, I remember reviewing that manga for AUKN. I didn't think that people would be stupid enough to rehire him.

A Japanese company entering a market and having no idea how that market actually works, say it ain't so!

But no, really they're going to be shocked when they find the turnaround blocker isn't the translation (which is what they're hoping to speed up with AI), but literally everything else that goes into printing books.

It’s an inexcusable ‘High-Risk Zero-Reward’ plan.

They hired someone, multiple people in fact, who can’t: use his real name, attend any industry event, talk to other writers, be photographed in public etc. And when any of these things happen the scheme blows damaging everyone involved and ruining the company’s relationships with their talent. there is nothing reason to do this. It’s just dangerously evil and stupid people choices with no consideration for others.

I’m glad those authors are using their positions to fight back against this.
