The Lazarus simulcast is dub-only on Channel 4

Lazarus ep1: Well, I tried to watch this on Channel 4 and it was dub-only, so I stopped watching. Unlike with Devil May Cry there's no excuse for this. Pathetic to still have this happening for an exclusive stream in 2025.

Yeah, it's crazy to see this happening and I personally am more put off than most by this since the JP side is a stellar cast. And there have been quite a few interesting comments made about the acting direction and recording of Lazarus in JP, so I was looking forward to experiencing the hard work they put into it. My plan currently is to figure out if there's a Japanese service it's streaming on and just watch it there, which is becoming an increasing trend this season as shows go unlicensed.

Watanabe's stuff seems cursed with poor streaming in general. Carole & Tuesday might have been fine on Netflix, but I remember the mess that was Terror in Resonance when that was banished to some new streaming service of the month...

@Sarah @Rui @Demelza I would have defaulted to watching in English if it's done well, but think it's bad that they aren't giving a choice, even more so since even if Lazarus turns out to have a great English dub, what does one do if a show is only available in English and the dub sucks?

Yes, and it would be just as crummy if it was the other way around (delayed dub when the dub already exists and is widely available elsewhere - dub delays due to production turnarounds are understandable but this is a marketing decision, nothing more). I think it's an accessibility failure for services not to provide as many viewing options as possible for everyone to enjoy. And I simply don't want to watch a show with some of the best veteran seiyuu in the industry in a form I'll enjoy far less 😭

Hopefully it will retain enough hype that I'll actually remember to go back later (I feel scammed though since I paid for Channel 4!)

Yep, I agree that it should have been all or nothing provided you have everything ready to go and otherwise available. This is just a silly tactic that has ultimately already turned off quite a few potential viewers, which is losing the mass market you're hoping for with such a prolific director at the helm.

I've always been happy to give a good dub a chance (and I used to love the Canadian Ocean Group dubs back in the noughties and always will) but I'd still like to be able to hear the original cast in the original language as well.

(One things about US dubs that always perplexes me is that - and this isn't about US VAs assuming 'British' accents to play British characters - we never (or very very rarely and usually for films) hear British VAs. So we're always hearing American voices which again adds a level of 'otherness' to relating to the characters. Good though many of the VAs are, I feel there's a kind of sameyness in the way certain characters are delivered to us in American, samey inflections, reactions etc. esp. when it's high school comedies/romances. So I'd love to hear, let's say, Honey Lemon Soda or Sasaki and Miyano or Shoshimin with UK actors just to find out if it delivers a different kind of feel. I'll get me coat...)

The probably only got what they were given by Adult Swim!
Who time-delays language options?!
Every anime ever, if you only watch dub 😉
defaulted to watching in English
I had no option when watching the stuff on AnimeCentral back in the day. Still haven't watched Cowboy Bebop, Bleach, FMA (OG) in Japanese (I have rewatched GitS in Japanese, just didn't feel quite right!) and then when I starting to get into more anime series rather than films after getting Netflix there's plenty of classics I've only ever seen dubbed Death Note, FMA:Brotherhood, Black Lagoon, s1 of Attack on Titan, etc. The only one I didn't have a choice but to watch subbed was Kill La Kill (and the subs were awful, just plain white!). Only when getting into seasonal did I really started getting into subbed, but again not much choice if you want to keep ahead of spoilers as dubs are normally a week or 2 behind. Now I'm in binge/catch-up mode again I've switched again (unless no choice ie no dub or a sequal of something I really like so sub is needed (something I'm not too bothered about ie Demon Slayer, JJK and recently Mashle I've switched to dub)). So Frieren, Apothecary Diaries and Delicious in Dungeon all watched dubbed and didn't make the former 2 any less great!

Anyway:
Lazarus (dub 😜) ep 1
Oh look Spike has learnt parkour!

The US is also time-delayed I believe, so there is that (though frankly that's still very much on Adult Swim). Also as Rui said, there is a big difference between the dub is later because making dubs the same day as Japanese is difficult due to the circumstances involved and this where the Japanese is ready to go. It's just silly for no actual reason, at least usually you can understand they need the time to dub it.

Haven't they put some money into it? Probably want as many eyes on as possible and probably more people would watch dubbed than subbed.

Sure and I think that's reasonable given the director and the hope to capture the mass market, but on the other hand the Japanese audio track is finished so it's completely nonsensical not to have it offered for those who would prefer it.

The thing is while the dub is a good idea for the mass market, right now (for no reason!) you are actively losing a small percentage of the audience who wanted to see it with the JP audio track. And to me it's silly to have gone to all the effort of a day 1 dub and so on, only to ignore the anime viewers who prefer not to watch that way. It's almost like just swapping one group for another rather than supplying both, especially when you have the ability to serve both!

Exactly what I was thinking - no-one who wants to watch it dubbed is being stopped from doing that by them offering both audio tracks (plus optional English subtitles ofc!)

cue the little girl from the advert who says "why can't we have both?" in Spanish or another related language :)

Yeah, this isn't a sub versus dub thing. There are a million reasons why people might prefer dubs, and in turn I have a strong preference for seeing everything in the original language which I (reasonably, I think) expect to be respected in an era where multiple languages are the norm. I actually thought I disliked anime for a long time growing up when it turned out that all I actually didn't enjoy were dubs; this doesn't mean I don't want stuff to get dubs or think dub actors are bad (I've been following Critical Role for years!)

I also have some accessibility issues which make it less enjoyable for me to decode US slang, accents and the unusual speech patterns used in a lot of dub scripts while watching, much like some people just genuinely can't get on with subtitles and find that they get in the way of the fun. Fans don't need to promote one or the other because we can - and should - have both in a world where we want the big titles to reach the biggest audience possible. Happy to go into my accessibility issues at great, exhaustive length if we want to spin this out into a debate 🫢

This season is pretty stacked, at least, so Lazarus shooting itself in the foot just means that it will have a smaller audience than it could have done. All because of dummies in suits making choices for the good of people that they don't even understand.

I think it is further complicated by it being a TV channel as well as having it streaming. They want that ad money, although I'm sure they could have 2 slots, one for each. Although maybe the Japanese side have their own stipulations 🤷‍♂️

It goes on Max the next day, apparently. So I get not wanting to take two slots for it, but you could have the JP audio on streaming instead.

It could well be the Japanese side, as you say, but in that case I will just say the same thing that whoever made the decision was silly to have made it. XD

Maybe it is, should be kept in mind that Uzumaki debuted on adult swim in the US with the subtitled version (with the dub on max following broadcast and then on TV a day or so after). When it was on channel 4, they just uploaded the dub version and that was that.
Perhaps sending feedback might change that, or maybe it's a preference of the broadcaster (not that they haven't aired subbed stuff before that had English audio options too), I don't know. This has been the general play of anime on their service from adult swim (the English audio, all but 1 are dubs).

I might check the show out when it's done and see what's said about, have my own issues with WB contracting to Sentai enmasse as of late. Hope it's a better turn out than the Houston effort in kids on the slope, but not expecting Cowboy Bebop or Space Dandy either.

Wait what there's a new Watanabe show this season!? Hyped! This is news to me, I had no idea this was coming!
Maybe I should temper my expectations though as I thought Terror In Resonance was merely ok at the time, and on revisiting it more recently discovered that I think it's actually pretty poor. I still need to give Carole and Tuesday a proper watch though.

Watanabe has still made three of my all time favourite anime though in Bebop, Macros Plus and Samurai Champloo. So I have hope!

Right I've just watched the trailer and it could really go either way, couldn't it? It's looks like it's hopefully fun, but to be honest I feel like Watanabe is better when his series are more meandering and character driven than this one looks to be.

I actually still really dig Terror in Resonance, but Carole and Tuesday really didn't do enough to develop it's titular leads IMO, which was particularly frustrating given it's a 2-cour series. It has it's moments but I found the two girls insultingly facile in their lack of dimensions and dropped the series near the end 😅

I'm extremely hyped for Lazarus though! :)

I’m interested in seeing Lazarus, but I wasn’t all that sold on the trailers and this current debacle hasn’t done much to endear it to me any further.

It came up on the discord, but in case anyone hasn’t heard, there have also been questions over whether Adult Swim was given an early master that wasn’t fully complete. The differences don’t seem dramatic as far as I can tell, but some eagle-eyed viewers have spotted changes in the timing of scenes and the number of key frames being used during certain scenes between Adult Swim’s stream and the Japanese broadcast of the first episode.
