UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in this thread, but I found that for some reason the subtitle script on the Violet Evergarden Movie BD is the Eastern Asian one that was released on iTunes there (which in turn is also more or less word for word what's spoken in the Eastern Asian English dub)...

Defective or Disappointing UK Anime Discs

Yes. Pretty sure the AU/UK BD is a re-encode of the discs he did for Viz so they could fit it on 2 BD50s and 2 BD25s rather than 4 BD50s. How severe are we talking? Appare Ranman had such severe banding that Funimation actually applied rather heavy handed debanding to it (even the JP BDs for...

4K scan doesn't necessarily = 4K master. I believe it was scanned at 4K and restored/mastered at 1080p. It blows the old master away regardless. Theoretically, even if a 4K master did exist, the amount of money it'd cost to access said materials, author and replicate all the UHD discs for a 70...

I went through all the episodes subtitle tracks in SubtitleEdit, and on the plus side only Disc 1 is affected by this. No issues in the signs track for the dub.

To follow up on this as well, it also uses the Netflix stream version rather than the Home Video master.

B The Beginning suffers from the same I-Frame Pulsing issue as Birthday Wonderland, so it's constantly alternating between properly encoded frames and badly encoded frames. The discs are also missing the Creditless OP, as well as three variants of the Creditless ED (there's four total). EDIT...

Overseas UK Blu-Ray List / Australian Blu-ray List / USA Region B and Geolocked List

Sentai doesn't region lock any of their releases and haven't done for years. Pretty sure the only check it their discs do is to make sure the player region isn't Japan. Funimation and Viz on the other hand both Region and Geolock their BDs.

Overseas UK Blu-Ray List / Australian Blu-ray List / USA Region B and Geolocked List

I don't own the Funi discs but whilst technically region free, they're 100% geolocked. The setup of the disc is 100% identical to the Aniplex counterparts just with extras removed. If your player region is set to US/Mexico the disc will play, anything else is locked. For example, they work of UK...

FWIW almost every Funimation release nowadays is 2xBD50s with high 20/low 30mbps encodes. It’s amazing what being owned by Sony can do for you.

He's put on a pedestal because outside of those few titles that went wrong, he has built up a reputation of being pretty much the only consistently good US aniBD encoder throughout the years. If you look at the other distributors over the last decade, it's all ups and downs, generally starting...

Defective or Disappointing UK Anime Discs

I don't know if this is necessarily a fair comment seeing as, assuming this is the same individual, they've done previous BDs which were actually encoded pretty competently, albeit with increased gamma. I literally only own Amanchu from them though, and I've seen part of an episode of Silver...

Just to add to that in response to Shadow Cat's question. Colours being wrong has become more and more common nowadays for some reason. Viz Media encodes everything in the colour space for SD content, everything Funimation encodes has a red tint, and even Crunchyroll gets things wrong sometimes...

I probably didn't pick the best examples as I literally picked one spot and got the first two examples to hand. It does get worse that what I posted though. I added a second comparison to my post showcasing another example. Seeing as they're my initial caps posted on Discord they are 1440p...

Just to chime in some more here considering feedback is more likely to be seen - I have absolutely 100% confidence in saying that the materials received to encode Violet Evergarden from aren't the issue. Why do I think that? Today I received Birthday Wonderland - another set authored by the same...
