Hey, I'm obviously new here

Hello everyone,

I have just started getting back into anime after a VERY long hiatus. I am from an era where channel 4 (in the uk) used to play Anime in the early hours at the weekends. They introduced me into AKIRA, Vampire Hunter D and many more.

Anyway looking forward to getting to know some of you and hopefully find some gems in the buying and selling part of the forum. ✌🏻

Hey there! I'm one of this forum's Vampire Hunter D fans, have you read or listened to (now they are doing those fun dramatized audiobook adaptations) any of the novels? I am 37 but because I was quite sensitive to gore as a young 'un (still am though less so with animated gore now), I would have been unlikely to watch late night channel 4 airings of anime like Akira at that time, so my gateway drugs were more things like Studio Ghibli films, some of Gainax's work at that time (FLCL and His and Her Circumstances), early Makoto Shinkai works, Cowboy Bebop, and things like Serial Experiments Lain and Kino's Journey. What other anime did/do you enjoy? You have reminded me I still need to buy the Akira manga boxset and read the whole thing! :)

Hey! VHD was so awesome as a kid, so stylistic - they all seemed more stylistic back then. Regarding the audio book adaptations, no I have not listened to any of them and in fact it is the first I'm learning about them. The AKIRA box set is so cool, I also need to purchase it. My friend has it and its really cool to look at on the shelf.

In terms of things that I am into now, I recently got into Dandadan and Highschool Of The Dead. Tokyo Ghoul is also on my radar.

Did you used to buy the old MANGA comics? I vividly remember having a few magazines of Dominion Tank Police, those were cool.

I'm not a particularly nostalgic person but every pop culture era has a certain look tbf. I would def recommend those audiobooks, they are very well done, I've listened to the first 16 of them! The Akira boxset does look very boss, but for now I'm prob gonna end up stalling on it for other manga titles such as Call of the Night, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, Barakamon and Silver Spoon :)

Ah cool, I am currently watching Tsurune, my PA's gotten really into it too cuz he does martial arts so we're kinda watching it together, and I'm rewatching Fruits Basket (2019 remake) and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (the latter two both with my boyfriend), I am also reading the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga :)

I've seen vintage issues of stuff like that and I do own some quite old manga but I've never been a big magazine collector, I think the oldest manga I currently own are probably Moon Child from CMX and Silent Mobius from Viz :)

Hi what years was that? I am a 90s kid and do not recall any of those being on C4 although I might have been out at raves while they were being aired during that time, hmm but actually I didn't start going to those until about 99. Would actually have been prime time for me to be stumbling back in after White Lightening or other budget alcoholic cocktails in the village probably around 1 to 2 am before I started going to those all nighters, so strange I never knew about them.

I just remember stuff like Ally Mcbeal on C4 late at night and that Oogachacka baby on it. Though iirc channel 4 had different programming for different areas right? I was in Wales so maybe that is why.

My first anime/manga I watched, or at least owned, that I recall was Akira where I had to buy it from HMV only on visiting my father in the city. I lived very rural as well so access was even more limited, pre broadband and general internet accessibility of media. Some friends would have likewise had videos they would have gotten in a similar fashion and we just swapped the very meager collections. I was not super into anime/manga then though, just another interesting thing of lots of interesting things during those great days. As above, rave music was the big thing mostly that people were into where I was. Oh and warhammer 40k was big for me probably before the music took over in my more middling teens.

Ahhh I wish I could go back to those halcyon days but with a morsel of the wisdom I have now to take better advantage of what there was then. But alas it is not possible.

Ah nice! I am going to have to search some of those ones that you have mentioned here, I must have been living under a rock as I'm not failure with any of them o_O

It has to be between 1991 and 1994, they would play MANGA at approximately 3am (I think) Saturday nights.

In fact, I just asked ChatGPT and it showed me a schedule "Sat 8th January 1994, 23:05 - BBC2 - AKIRA"

wow, that is a blast from there past. It also mentions that they showed

Fist of the North Star
Cyber City Oedo 808
Vampire Hunter D (apparently I didn't need to buy it) ;)
3x3 Eyes
Battle Angel Alita
Rouijin Z

So yea, it definitely happened but it was BBC2 and sometimes Channel 4

HMV and MANGA videos was so cool back in the day, core memory unlocked - thank you.

Argh I hate how 'I just asked chatgpt' has become the new 'I just googled'. Can't get into it tbh. :) I find it unnerving how everyone is relying on it so much within a matter of months.

I just watched Battle Angel Alita (again) couple of days ago. Awesome setting and style but horridly short. I want another long series to sink my teeth into. Fist of the North Star series was great while it lasted - watched it 1st time a couple of months ago. I had watched the movie and heard many times the series is where it is really at and how they just butchered most of the stories for the movie. Was not disappointed, except when I finished it. :)
