Recession hits UK Anime fans again

With Suppliers and distributers closing left right and centre earlier this year, claiming companies such as ADV and stores like Zavvi, another victim could be claimed before Christmas.

Border's today stopped taking orders for new books while it's in discussion with potential buyers, after news that it may not have the funds to reach the new year, with WH Smiths, HMV and Waterstones looking to make bids.

Borders is the biggest supplier of Manga offline and would leave UK fans with only Online stores and Waterstones or WH Smiths as distributers, both who have limited manga selections as it is.

Did Zavvi have actual high street shops or something? Their website is still doing fine I think.

Not bothered about Borders because there isn't one for miles where I live.

I hope Borders survives. I prefer to buy my manga online like many others, but there's something to be said about popping into the Borders in town to browse for things you wouldn't normally have looked at.

Luckily there are two specialist retailers in Brum City Centre which stock more manga than Borders, but it'd be a shame to see it close.

I work for a specialized Manga Store just outside of London.

We get our stock in from the USA so everything is very up to date and close to Japan as we can get. We also do Post and Packaging.

If Anyones interested to know more, please let me know and i'll post some more details ^^

BTW this ISN'T some annoying jokey thing which could lead to Spam and stuff, please trust me on that. >.<

Does this not just concern online sales? I'm sure that's what I read somewhere earlier.

EDIT: here

But it does sound as though the company is in serious trouble.

the ordering new books yes, but you can't order new books in store without the online sales, but Borders are struggling atm and as i said, may not last to see 2010

It's either that or shameless free advertising. Not very good either way. I you want advertising, get some ads up on some of the bigger, ad funded anime websites in the UK.

As for Borders, they only have one store for the entire south east. I never really buy online either, I just order what I want from waterstones in-store and pay by cash when it arrives.

We have a GAME in our borders...I am not sure how closely they are linked though.

On a side-note, it continues to astound me that WH Smith are still open... I expexted them to be soon to go after Woolworths... And now they are looking to buy as well? :O

strangely enough, so do we, and a Costa coffee

makes it stranger that in the same retail park is a proper game store and a Costa coffee too XD

Well, I've not been for a while, but it would be nice for it to still be around. I generally buy my offline manga from Waterstones in the city centre, but the more the merrier.

Damn, this would be bad news. As Fudce says, it not so much that it would take away too much from Birmingham city center's manga selection, but I like looking around Borders, they have a good selection of US magazines, and they have a Starbucks in there rather than Costa as they seem to have in every other bookstore.

I'm the same. I can't understand who buys much in WHSmiths as they are expensive compared to everywhere else. They don't stock anything specialist and they charge more for everything. I've no idea how they do it, to be honest.

Maybe that's just my local one though? Maybe other WHSmiths' stock things worth buying, bar confectionery?

With the WHSmith's thing, I guess its because people buy DVDs online and you know, people don't buy stationary, newspapers and magazines online. As a bookstore, though, I hate them. The shops are always in such a state.

I never find anything worthwhile in WHSmiths... I only venture in there once a year to get a year planner.
It's a shame about Border's as the store had a better atmosphere than Waterstones. (To me anyway :p it's probably a design/layout thing)

The only places I can buy manga in store are WH Smiths & Waterstones which both have only small sections. The nearest Borders store to me is in Birmingham - too far to bother with.

There used to be a Travelling Man but that closed down as did Forbidden Planet earlier this year.

I buy most things online now - video games, dvds/blu-rays, cds, books/manga - about the only things I don't buy online are food/drink & clothes.
