Yet more US anime licenses

Keeping you up to date with the latest US licensed anime; Geneon have recently acquired DearS while just this evening, Media Blasters announced their acquisition of Grenadier (reviewed by Ross Taylor in this month's fansub column).

This news comes hot on the heels of the recent US anime acquisitions of Naruto (ShoPro), Melody of Oblivion and Girls Bravo (both Geneon).

Certainly a great deal of fanservice anime's being licensed recently :? , hopefully ADV and Funimation have their eyes on some shows with a bit more variety *wants to see Oh My Goddess , Air , Monster and Twin Spica licensed*

Totally agree! This is where my theory of male-orientated anime releases comes from

Air TV is one of my faves at the moment and if it doesn't get a license at some point, I'd be very surprised!

I think it's quite disappointing too. I've made no secret of my disdain towards fan-service anime. Grenadier, DearS, Girls Bravo and to some extent, Melody of Oblivion, are all dominated by it and are horribly derrivative as a result.

I'd have preferred it if they saved the money and invested in further promoting some of their current titles or in producing another series like Kino's Journey.

Great shout on Monster, MangaMinX- what a show this is turning out to be. I'd wager just one character from Monster has more depth than in any of the above shows put together. Johan = One of the greatest villains, ever.

Hopefully some of the more in depth shows will be licensed soon ,Havent Bandai prelicensed Eureaka 7? , (new Studio BONES anime starting in April) , BONES tend to put out good titles so could prove to be an excellent show.

With the US con season coming up , its fairly certain that the other big US companies will be announcing some licenses soon .

Fanservicey things are alright, you probably wouldn't care about them as much if they weren't flooding the market as much. They aren't the most noticed and renowned titles of today (If they were then stuff like Evangelion would have been knocked off the Newtype top ten list), so I really shouldn't worry about them taking attention away from the deeper Animes. Its a trend at the minute, much like the Super Robot shows of the 70s.

Whilst it can't be ignored that Grenadier and DearS have their fair share of fan service, they also have some decent stories going on as well. It's series like Ultimate Girls that truly deserve the fan-service put-downs, there's little else to it. Admittedly, episode 4 of UT was quite funny in parts, it's amazing thinking of it getting made as it's literally nothing but fan service.

Ah well, I am a DearS and Grenadier fan...

Oh I agree with you here. I dont find fanservice spoils an anime for me to a real extent ( Im the only girl I know with Najica in her anime collection  ) , if a series has a plot I can find entertaining I can find fanservice to be pretty funny. While I have no intention of buying any more anime that is as fanservice heavy as Najica , I dont object to these shows being licensed as some people obvious like them , and welcome the fact the shows have been licensed , which is great!

My main point was simply there are a lot of deeper plot heavy anime's from last year ( and this ) that im hoping will get a licence fairly soon as they are my prefered type of show to watch. :D

Where did the term "fan service" derive from in the first place? I understand what its about, but why call it such an obscure thing?

Why not call it "sexual suggestion service" (S.S.S. abbreviated  ) or something? :?: :?: :?:

Thank you.

i think it was something to do with fans asking for more of the popular characters in anime shows, so the studios did tongue in cheek spin offs which were known as 'fan service' because they featured these characters for the benefit of the fans. that's the story i heard anyway.

Another name for it is ecchi, which I get the impression is another term for perverted  (in the sense of boys looking at girls knickers etc not hentai type perversion!!).

Your'e right; ecchi is slightly perverted, as in sexually references and fanservice but not explicit pornography, which falls under hentai, which is a whole different world.
