When They Cry

After finishing Vandread, I started watching my Vol. 1 & 2 DVD's a couple of days ago...

The series blew me away initially. For the first few episodes (the first story arc), the pacing was perfect, slowly introducing you to all the main characters and only moving it a faster pace once the viewer got to know everyone important a little. So many series do that first step wrong, throwing too much at the viewer at once, leaving them unable to remember the names of the characters. The first arc amused, thrilled and (to a certain extent) scared me - It was truly amazing.

It all started to become a bit messy after the opening arc, though. I quickly discovered the series is told out of sequence and includes parallel universes. I also discovered that there seems to be one question and one answer arc for each parallel universe. If anyone else has a memory as bad as mine, I'm sure they'd understand how hard it is to follow the events of various story arcs that occur in parallel universes (most of the arcs being told out of order) while trying to figure out the mystery!

I'm currently at episode 22/26. This final (at least I'm assuming it is...) arc of season 1 looks like its going to focus on Rena, one of the characters who I don't like very much. I don't mind too much since the previous six episode answer arc was about my favourite 2 characters; the hot green-haired twins; Mion and Shion.

What do you guys think of it? :p

Watched the first three and a bit arc's before I stalled on this series, more because it was a little predictable. Always the 'Bad' or 'Very Bad' ending. Did mean to pick it up again, but it got licensed. Hope it gets licensed over here so i can rent it.

Sadly it was dropped, so anyone who wanted to see it all had to download it or whatever. Hopefully it gets rescued one day.

I didn't think the second series was as good in content (but thats for you to decide yourself); I found the arcs in the first series more enthralling, but it does help explain things in much more detail.

From what I understand, the first series has all the question arcs and the second has the remaining answer arcs. The mystery is always going to be more interesting than the solution to it. :p

I must admit, I'm starting to struggle to find the motivation to keep watching. The thought of another 28 episodes (including the 2nd season) doesn't fill me with joy when I feel like I've seen everything once already... The parallel universe thing makes the show seem like its standing still; like there's no progress.

*sigh*... I just hope there's a lot more Mion/Shion action to come. Apart from Keiichi and Oishi, the smexy twins are the only characters I like... Rena is the annoying shy type (unless she goes insane), Rika is the incredibly annoying type and Sakoto isn't that appealing to me.

Sakoto pisses me off so much; I wish she died. Oh wait, she does, several times. Damn!

Shion gets more lime light in the second series (in fact, it seems like she's there from the beginning unlike in the first).

Just to get more replies:

Shion....

Hmm... the first arc didn't really scare me. More made me feel a bit iffy at times... Clawing out his own throat... bleurgh  .
Then again, I'm squeamish like that.
