What mixes better with anime? Gothic-ness or Gangsta style?

Vampire Ninja
After watching many, many anime with some Being Very dark, Eery, serious and Gothic (Hellsing, Ergo Proxy, Gilgasmesh) and some of them being Cool, Rap for background music, Gangsta style language and more humour used (Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai). Then i sarted to think what mixed better with anime: a Gothic theme or Hip-hop/Gangsta theme.

The thing with anime being gothic is that it can be funny at moments but is probably more focosed on the serious-ness. For example. I watched a episode of Gilgasmesh on T.V. once and it HARDLY had any humour at all. It was all so very serious. But Hellsing which is a lil gothic but is very funny at times. But the story in gothic anime is better then anime with a Hip hop theme

Anime with a Gangsta theme has a little more life in it. It uses much more humour and is more funny then gothic anime. Although the story in Gangsta themed anime isnt very interesting or complex. Such as Afro samurai which maybe could of had a better story. But was brilliant anyway.

My opinion Anime with a Gangsta/Hip-hop style is better because it has a lil more life AND maybe a lil more action. Just watch Afro samurai and youll see what i mean. But thats just my opinion. And besides, Iam the Real O.G. Biatch!

So what do you think is better? Gothic anime or Gangsta anime?

P.S. Sorry for spelling mistakes.

There's more anime using gothic style than gangsta/hip-hop, which really speaks for itself. Not that I'm condemning hybrid's of the latter (I did like Afro Samurai), anime steals 'ahem' borrows from a variety of genres and how well it's done is completely subjective.

Still I'm going to go with gothic. When it's done right the results can be breathtaking. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was an example I watched recently. The artwork, atmosphere and animation are all superb; Shows just how well animation can work with horror under the right circumstances.

As for Hip-Hop influenced anime, to be honest I'm struggling to think of many other examples beyond the ones you suggested.

Tokyo Tribes 2 was a great show with a good urban soundtrack to boot.

indeed, though I do have to admit that there are way more Gothic based animes, I watched Hellsing and loved it to bits.. I think Hip Hop/Urban based anime is VERY cool as well.. firstly because I listen to and love hip hop and secondly because within these animes, the style and art is more modern, a little more experimental and I love the graffiti apprloach within some Anime's such as Samurai Champloo, I like the storylines to them as well..

As for Gothic, I have nothing against it nor do i favouritise Urban based anime to it, I love the edgy approach to them especially the storylines and character designs, I dont really think Blood+ was gothic but would've worked well with a Gothic theme,

In conclusion I feel Anime is Anime and whatever/whereever your preferences may be/ may lie if an Anime is good, then it will be watched by the global audience anyways, Afro Samurai being an example... I just feel that when a certain substance (such as hip hop in this case) which I am familiar and personal to, Its a little more easier to connect and 'feel' the anime as well.. hehe thats jus my opinion

I prefer gothic-ness but just because personal preference I suppose. I didn't see Samurai Champloo yet but it looks pretty cool~
My friend was recently asking for animes with hip hop style for inspiration for college work, so I can see how there are barely any T.T;

Gothic is better. The whole gangsta feel is not good. I just don't like that culture at all. Too similar to chav culture. The music is c*** also! 50cent, pah!

Gilgamesh is serious but not all gothic anime is going to be serious. Actually, Gilgamesh is a great anime. Watch it ALL and find out!

Don't mean to offend anybody

Heh, you just reminded me of this.

Although personally I don't have a particular prefernce for either style - I just like being able to see a variety of styles in the stuff I watch.
