The return of Futurama. Not just the DVD movies being shown on TV as most people anticipated, but a whole new 26 episode season on Comedy Central. :D

Anyone else looking forward to this? Personally I love Futurama and compared to the staleness of the last er, 7 or so seasons of The Simpsons found it an absolute breath of fresh air. Season four had a few misses, but given that they knew they were cancelled at that point I got the feeling they were trying a little too hard to tie up loose ends. I loved the three DVD movies I've seen so far (I'm waiting for the Yonder Blu-ray to drop in price)

This is both very good and at the same time unsettling.
On one hand - Yes, new futurama! The simpsons can kiss my shiny metal ass!
On the other hand - They might have got bored of destroying the simpsons so they're gonna give futurama a few series worth of it.

Hopefully not, but this is good news!

Yaaay! I know I've still missed quite a few episodes over the years so I really need to stick the existing sets on my wishlist this Christmas.

Will look forward to this.

I might watch this, provided it focuses on the comedy. Sentimentality choked The Simpsons into an almost unfunny state.

Which series' have you been watching Zin5ki? Over reliance on randomness, guest stars who were there for no reason other than that they wanted to be on the show, and the loss of any kind of coherant (and certainly any kind of good) plot in many episodes is what killed The Simpsons for me. I might not be entirely accurate in my assesment but once I watch several episodes of a comedy show without laughing and am left with a WTF!? face at the end of them I know it's over for me. It still managed ten good seasons before it started it's downhill slide, so I think there's milage in Futurama yet. And I think it has always stuck a much better balance between comedy and drama. Having an unrequited love plot between the main characters was a great idea and has provided not only many laughs but several touching moments as well.

As much as I loved the series it ended on a perfect note. The new DVD movies were watchable enough but proved that the writers couldn't really hold together a feature length story. This is what worries me about a new series, will it go down as a great revival of a series that got canceled before its time or just become another series past its sell by date.

Futurama has one major strength over The Simpsons in terms of longevity. It doesn't completely cower away from adding some drama into the mix and even keeping some running plot lines going. I hope they capitalize on that and don't ruin the characters in the process.

I absolutely adore the episodes about Fry's previous life (Seven leaf clover and the Seymour the dog episodes are amazing) and most of the sci-fi-ish episodes so I hope for more off that. I loved the first movie, but absolutely hated the second and haven't watched anymore since.

Two 13 episode seasons might be good, though. More quality checks etc.

Nah. I disagree, both Futurama and The Simpsons are at their best when they have a bit of sentimentality to the comedy. Otherwise Homer isn't even a lovable parent, just a bad drunkard.

That's the thing. One of my more rigid views is that a comedy, when executed best, must abstain from enticing the viewer to take the content seriously. I can recall several episodes of Groening's flagship shows ending on a unsatisfactory note, because of the introduction of dramatic weight to a previously light-hearted tale. If Futurama is technically a drama with an emphasis on comedic content, something which I didn't originally assume it to be, then in future it'll need to sell itself to me on entirely new terms.
Naturally, most other viewers have a better tolerance for this sort of combination; this is just my subjectivity at work.

My thoughts exactly.
