According to reports on the Anime News Service, Warner Bros. have snapped up the worldwide distribution rights to the upcoming Gonzo anime movie Brave Story. The Japanese theatrical release is tentatively scheduled for this coming summer season, but no US or European dates have been set as yet.

Brave Story is based on the original novel by Miyuki Miyabe, a best seller in Japan. Gonzo plans to animate the film incorporating the latest digital techniques.

Based on a best-selling novel by Miyuki Miyabe, the film will be produced by Chihiro Kameyama, who's responsible for Fuji TV's hit cop film franchise "Bayside Shakedown."

Now in pre-production and budgeted at around $10 million, Brave Story is skedded to be released in Japan in summer 2006.

It's a fantasy about the adventures of a boy and his mother. Pic will be directed by Koichi Chiaki and the animation will be handled by Japanese toon shop Gonzo Digimation, which is part-owned by Fuji TV.

The pic reflects Fuji TV's quest to enter the realms of Japanese animation maestro Hayao Miyazaki, who has created a string of blockbusters including Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and The Princess Mononoke.

Sounds interesting, I don't know of Gonzo doing a feature before, apart from maybe a feature length version of one of their series.

Koichi Chigira will direct Buena Vista Intl. Japan's CGI pic BRAVE STORY, produced by Fuji Television and Gonzo Digimation. Based on the bestselling novel by Miyuki Miyabe, story concerns a 10-year-old who enters a magical world to find a cure for his mother's illness.

That's from ain't-it-cool news. It looks like only 2 books of about 35 by Miyuki Miyabe have been translated to English and neither are Brave Story, so it's hard to find info.

Slightly more info from last year:

A fantasy adventure in which 10 year old Wataru enters the phantom world to ask a goddess to save his seriously injured mother. A tale of the love between mother and child, of friendship and about growing up.

It should be good seeing as the studio founded by one of the muppets is behind it. Sorry.

A very bad and, no doubt, over used joke. You may shoot me in the knees now.

Sounds like something to keep an eye out for though (contradiction intended). :)
