Voice of the Distant Star - And a recomendation from you...

I went onto the Anime Network site and looked up on the Time Schedule, and the one that caught my eye were Voice of a Distant star. I remember it while back when Paul did a underrated list of the anime back in May. I should be hunged for not listening to it that time. Ah well, better late than never.

In the end, I think it was excellent. The long distance romance was really moving for me, and 2 characters can really make a really heart warming and depressing anime. The Mecha Scene were.... below mediocre, but that doesn't matter compared to the plot, the script and moblie phones... I mean characters.

So I really recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Also, can you recommend me a Anime in the likes of Voice of a Distant Star? Romance in mecha are a perfect match, me thinks.

Eureka Seven; AKA Evangelion for kids.

Btw it is alright, nothing amazing, though I have appreciation for the guy who done it all by himself.

Voices of a Distant Star is a mini-masterpiece - Makoto Shinkai is a genius.

By the same director: The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5cm per Second (we're still waiting for the DVD release date...it's out in December in the US).

Gunbuster (same director as Evangelion, less of a brain-melter) is an old, 6-part OAV that deals with how war against aliens and differences in time can affect relationships.

Pale Cocoon: a hard-to-find futuristic short film that's similar in being short, really impressive in a CGI kind of way and also has a gorgeous song towards the end. That may have been an independent one-man effort too, I'm not sure. Anyway, his new movie, Eve no Jikan, is allegedly out later this year.

I second Eureka Seven...possibly my fave DVD release of the year.

The Shinkai Collection is out on DVD - I'll think I have to pick that up eventually!

Both Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in our Early Days were basically made by just Makoto Shinkai, right? But 5cm Per Second had a big budget?

I second this recommendation, I can't stress enough on how good it is, even if I'm late to the party with watching it, it was truly something different.

No only Voices was made my Makoto Shinkai on his own. The Place Promised in our Early Days and 5cm Per Second we're done in studio's with a team of people and a largish budget *still doesn't make them any better mind you*. Makoto Shinkai's movies are just amazing

I'm with Martin and Lupus Inu on the Gunbuster reccomendation. It's well over 20 years, but I watched about a month ago and still enjoyed it immensely!

Ah. So, what studio made them with Makoto Shinkai?

I actually picked up the Shinkai collection a week before its release at Tomo-Dachi.
Both movies are amazing visual spectacles.
I dont think Ive ever been more impressed at an animes backdrops, just amazing.

Urgh. I absolutely Hate Shinkai. Voices was just terrible. I've never given the others a chance, I wanted to see 5CM until I found out it was by him!!! Bah.

Y'all either praise him or hate him.

My own personal preferences aside, isn't it a bit stupid to judge a film maker on just one of his movies? If you said "Seen all, didn't like any of them" I'd understand. Meh.
