VA's

Would anyone like to share their thoughts about the voices actors/actresses that work in anime?

I watch almost all anime with the original language track but I sometimes try out an episode in the English dub. I find that it’s usually the male VA’s that fail to do justice to their parts.

But the thing that actually upsets me about the English VA’s is when I have occasionally decided to listen to a episode commentary and they just laugh and joke amongst themselves and often pretty much just take the piss out of the show. This last bit only happens when one of them suddenly remembers why they were doing this commentary in the first place. Admittedly they don’t have the same knowledge of the shows as their seiyu counterparts perhaps do, but this still doesn’t excuse their lack of respect for their, in a sense, employer. Glad I got that off my chest.

I don't listen to dubs enough to comment fairly, but my limited experience usually involved metaphorical blood gushing from the lacerated lobes of my hearing apparatus. It seems to me that every non-comedy anime is peopled by VAs who have no concept of subtly, and every comedy anime gets the leftover VAs from an american animation industry which directs the real voice talent towards programmers like the Simpsons.

I suspect that anime is viewed as a 'job between jobs' for most actors. Not without justification, since they may not be paid as much for doing anime.

I haven't listened to English dubs much. Yes, they usually make it feel like my ears are being violated, but there are some professionals. I have been impressed by Crispin Freeman on a few occasions.

The End of Eva commentary kinda pissed me off after a while for exactly what harkins said. In that they also mentioned how they added these 'cool' sound effects. Why are they cool sounding? They just sounded silly and didn't need to be added at all.

Also in a lot of ADV interviews and commentarys they seem to act like they are the ones that created the show.

It depends compeltley on the actor and how much they put into thier role, you could also blame the people that employ them as they think they are upto the job.

I've heard crappy dub after crappy dub but you can tell when a Voice Actor puts some effort into it. The VA's for Spike and Jet from Cowboy Bebop do an excellent job, the same goes for the VA cast of the Macross Plus dub. Also with Tenchi the voice cast is on of my favourites.

There will always be some good dub voice actors and some bad ones.I usually always watch an anime with the dub first, then watch it as a sub afterwards.Because we all know that a dub can make or break an anime. There are some dubs i adore though such as Trigun which i wont watch as a sub.Theres also some voice actors thats i adore and love whatever they do because they have such a great voice.Especially the guy who does Spike Speigal's voice.

I avoid english dubs, just can't get into them as easily as the original actors. I find that the english actors pull me out of the escapism anime offers me, something about them not truely matching the characters in front of me.

^what they said. I do the same. I sometimes just watch the sub if I like the dub (FMA for example) And I'm a fan of alot of VA's anyway (mainly Crispin freeman, Jonney Y. Brosh and Liam 'O brian)
