Vandread (Series 1 and 2)

Well, uh, I kinda won an eBay auction for series 1 and 2 on a whim: The box was too big to say no to. :D It sounds like an interesting show and has some good reviews floating around.

Question: Is it actually any good?

Here's the link for those interested in my latest eBay purchase: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0213719482

...I really need to see someone about eBay addiction.

That's a great purchase at a bargain price. I recently bought an m-lock box set of the series and paid more than you have. It isn't likely to be featured in anyones 'essential anime list' but it is a lot of fun. The only thing that I didn't like was the slightly irritating and obtrusive soundtrack.

Beware of e-bay though. My bank once called me about e-baying after noticing a large number of pay-pal transactions while I was in the region of three grand overdrawn. I'm better now but I steer clear of e-bay. My main problem was that I couldn't stand loosing so I ended up making massive bids to try and ensure victory!

But anyway, enjoy Vandread.

btw, my favourite character was Miea Gisborn. It was that her that made me realise that my favourite character in any anime is nearly always the one with blue(ish) hair. No idea why though.

There's an m-lock/brick set with the 2 series? I didn't know.

£3000!? I'm not THAT bad: £300 is what I have been spending per month on eBay of late. I'm smart enough not to get into bidding wars and raise the price, instead using Gixen to snipe.

Anyway, unless the forum is full of incredibly lazy people, it doesn't seem many people on here have bothered with Vandread... That's probably the reason I got the set for only £26.

Vandread is brilliant, it has to be one of my all time fave series, with a great set up having men thinking all women are evil demons who watch to eat them alive (and not in the good way).

The main characters Hibiki and Dita have a great relationship with some nice cute scenes between them. Made all the more special with how the secondary characters react to them.

Your will not be disappointed by this series I promise you

I think it was a good show, wouldnt say its one of my favourites, but its definatly worth what you paid to be honest... Good buy!

Van Dread is made of fail. It stole ideas from Martian Successor Nadesico, which, apart from FMP, is the best mecha anime out there.

If you want to live in ignorance, be my guest.

Lies, G Gundam is the best mecha anime. Godannar can come second for the amazingness that was Volspina. Ahem...

Seriously though I don't really consider Nadesico a heavily mecha anime. Gai was the only vaguely hotblooded character in the series and it was more a parody/character show :s I don't consider Vandread much of one either though. I didn't like Vandread much but it's not my kind of thing so mileage may vary!

Nice stating of opinions as fact there by the way.

Edit: I suck at spelling, apparently.

My set arrived today. It looks nice, with minimal damage to the corners of the fairly huge box. :)

I'll probably watch it soon since I need to test the DVD's.

Vandread may not be the crème de la crème of anime and in some respects it is pretty naff but ultimately it is fun and has plenty of nice moments. So it’s not made of fail. One thing I would say for sure about Vandread is that it is not a mecha series. I can understand making comparisons to Nadesico but only in as much as they are both ‘space opera’.

This does make me ponder when a show that features some sort of piloted mechanical contraption does cross the line and become a ‘mecha show’.

So this series' title had me interested a little Vandread sounds pretty good? Too bad from what I saw it looked like a generic harem series in space. DO NOT WANT. Is it actually good or epic fail? [I'm betting Maxon is right btw]

Since I haven't got the final volume of Gilgamesh and Excel Saga hasn't managed to keep me interested, I'll be starting the series shortly to test the DVD's. I'll let you now my thoughts when I finish the first 13 episodes.

One thing is certain: The box is big (size matters), sexy and the DVD covers are shiny. Even if it's complete shite, I'll still be happy at getting an OOP box set for cheap.

Just finished watching the first volume. I'm not quite sure what I think about it, the only things certain being that it's light-hearted and has a poor soundtrack. So far, it seems to be an enjoyable enough series, but certainly not the sort of series you'd put in a top 10 list.

I haven't been able to understand a lot of what's gone on: Some crystal...thing 'infecting' and linking together ships, both ships somehow getting teleported to somewhere with an alien species and the male/female mechs somehow being able to combine together. I swear it's been designed with the intention of being as confusing as possible...

There hasn't been any real laugh out loud moments thus far. The only moment that came close was when Dita chased the main character (he's a rather poor lead; I've yet to remember his name!) around the ship. I expected more in terms of comedy.

Yeah the comedy was extremely lacking despite all the build up.

No problem. Who needs opinions anyway? Besides, I must compliment you for doing the exact same thing. Nice going. ;)

Sorry, the not-quite serious tone of my post obviously did not quite come through.
