United Publications Help

Thousand Master
I am looking at a couple online stores that sell anime & Manga stuff & I have been looking at Up1.co.uk for a while now but never bought of them. So Can You Mainly Wise & Great People help answer a couple of questions for me please

1) Main Question: Is United Publications any good?

2) DVD Wise Do they only do R1 or do they Sell R2, R0, etc.?

3) If they do other regions how can you tell the difference between them?

4) As regards quality, are the dvds & Books more or less in good condition on arrival

Any help is very much appreciated & thanks in advance :D

Yes they are quite good with their orders, they do R1 for all there stuff i believe, and they get it too ya really fast. And the quality of the DVD's and such are usually good when they arrive, no real damage at all if ever.

1) Yes, they're good

2) They mainly sell Region 1 DVDs, There are some R2E (UK) DVDs on the site too, clearly marked as Region 2. They don't stock Region 0 DVDs, as they are bootlegs. Bootlegs are not only illegal, they are also helping to destroy the anime industry.

3) see 2.

4) They arrive in very good quality. I have never had a broken box, or damaged book.

I pretty much use UP for all my DVD purchases, so I kinda use them a lot ;) (something like 5 to 10 deliveries a month)

My comments:

1) Yes, I highly rate them. Since they are a relatively small company and anime fans, out of all the retailers I've used I've found them to be the most reliable and most helpful. I've heard people call them expensive, but I find their prices comparable to buying something via expedited delivery from Amazon.com, and you don't have to worry about the extra 8 quid hit when your artbox gets stopped by Mr customs man!

2 & 3 already answered above, although I've never actually noticed a R2 on there yet ;) (I'm not trying hard enough obviously). UP will never sell any bootleg items, the guys there really really hate the bootleg trade.

4) Hmm, OK, I'll be honest here.
The packaging quality is normally very good, bubble wrapped envelopes for 1 or 2 DVD's, or up to 4 manga, delivery next day. I've only had a couple of instances of product damage this way, which was the Trinity Blood digipak collector editions. UP replaced every damaged item, and also started wrapping the digipaks in protective cardboard as an extra precaution.
For bigger and more expensive purchases, sturdy boxes are used with signed for delivery once it starts getting around 30 quid or over. I've never has any transit damaged items via the boxes.

Regardless of delivery though, I'd say something like 1/10th of the items I get from UP have some form of defect, which I stress is normally manufacture damage (and mostly manga). When I bulk ordered the Negima manga someone was a little too happy with the stanley knife, so some of them have a slight score across the cover (no so much that I'm fussed about it though). I think I'm just unlucky in this respect :(
Every time I do have a faulty item though, I contact UP and they replace it for me, you have to post it back to them, but they recoup you the postage cost off your next purchase (second class postage rates).

A few other comments:
If you want the best service, pre-order your DVD's and Manga. UP are small so don't keep big stocks of items. If you haven't preordered and its something not in stock, expect to have to wait a few weeks for their next bulk shipment from the wholesalers.
As for figures & models, UP are kinda at the end of the food chain on this so unless its a figure range that gets a lot of models shipped for the western market (e.g. Bome), then you'll find it can be very hit and miss if you ever get a figure. This is the same for pretty much all the western figure trade though, so you just have to live with it ;)
Personally, if it's a figure you really must have then preorder from someone like HLJ who are in Japan and can source a whole lot better (I recommend shipping via SAL, takes a month to get here but seems to get through customs easier).

So, to sum up, UP get two thumbs up, can't rate em highly enough :D

Thanks for the Replies Especially Fellistowe, very Detailed. As I said I have been looking at their site for a while now [Close on a Year now] but you never know how good something is unless you know someone who has used it or use it yourself.

Now All I gotta do is buy a multi region DVD Player & then I'm set

I'll give it go

You might be able to set your existing player to region free rather than need to buy a new player. Most DVD players have their regions soft encoded, since it is most economical for manufacturers to work this way. They make all of the players in the same way and then set the region at the end of the process. For this reason most players have the ability to have their region reset a number of times to allow engineers to fix potential problems and such.

I've bought off them on numerous occasions and the only problems were those of discontinued/out of stock items, which lie with the supplier and are out of UP1's control. The prices aren't bad, the delivery times are good too so overall I'd recommend them.

Be warned though that DVDs are R1 unless otherwise stated. Taking up Gawyn's suggestion and getting your player multi-region may be a good course of action too (although whether or not your TV set is compatible with the NTSC video is a separate issue).

Pretty much mentioned as above:
1) Yes. My main sorce of anime/manga.
2) Mainly R2, but with exceptions. Similar with things like Negima manga. Tanoshimi and Delray (UK vs USA) are 2 groups that distribute it on UP1, but the insides of the manga are just the same.
3) Wont repeat above... :D
4) I've never had a problem with packaging etc. They seem "top dollar" each time I get them.

Watch out for deliveries that are 7-28 days delivery though. They're usually out-of-print. I did also order Negima Ltd Edition DVDs, but Vol.2 was out of stock (even when they had "immediate delivery" still visable). But they'll inform you swiftly about these and similar issues.

yea mine is an obscure model, looked years ago it & couldn't find it. however just checked & some nice person left a note on some random website That actually showed me how to make it region free lol, yea now i can buy region 1 dvds :D

However I am still unable to unlock my portable dvd player [toshiba SD-P1600] so either someone knows how or I buy a new portable DVD player [I really don't wanna]

You really need to check the dates of the expos on the front page, and try to avoid buying stuff a few days before an expo.

On a few occasions, I've ordered Immediate Delivery stuff and had "Sorry...we did an expo last night and sold them all" or "We've got an expo in a few days and the books you ordered are packed in our van" (...and then sold out at the expo), so I had to wait a few weeks for them to come back in stock.

Not a big deal, just FYI.

,,,and they have someone named "Little John" working there, which is reason enough to buy from them. 8)
