Underrated retro classics?

Remember the retro games you used to love as a kid (maybe)? Not so much the bigger titles like Sonic or Mario, but the lesser known games that just turned up in 'Arcade Classics' type selections but were loved by the few people who'd heard of and played them.

A few that spring to mind for me are the following (for PC):

The Lion King: the original LK platformer, only 10 levels but still kept me occupied for a while, especially as I was competing with a friend to see who could finish it first (I won). Never could quite master the flip move, though- when I pulled it off it was mainly by luck, a little unfortunate as you need it to beat the last level.

Hocus Pocus: Another great old game that my family still enjoys playing, hideously difficult on any level other than easy, but generally fun. Great sound effects and music (in a bad kind of way).

Jazz Jackrabbit: Had the shareware version for years and found it easy, finally picked up the full game last summer only to discover how hard the later levels are. The rubber explosive 'launchers' are great, though

Alley Cat: Only worth a mention for its sheer obscureness- a weird little game where you play as a cat and have to run around avoiding dogs and jumping into windows to play mini-games. Despite being incredibly simple, it's one of the most stressful games ever.

Flight of the Amazon Queen: Quite a fun little puzzle game- I only had the demo version where you had to escape from a hotel, using such items as a pair of fake breasts :?

Fox Ranger: Another title mentioned for obscureness, a space shooter where all the level titles are read out in "Engrish". No idea what the story was about as it was all in Japanese.

Traffic Department 2192: A great game, very simple to play but a fun storyline packed with one liners. The second and third episodes were a bit of a letdown after the excellent first episode, though.

Okay, having bored you all to death I'll just briefly list some of the other games I enjoyed- Duke Nukem 1+2, Commander Keen, Monster Bash (horrible, but somehow compelling), Vinyl Goddess from Mars, Chip's Challenge, Jezzball and probably a bunch of others that I've forgotten.

So, anyway, what lesser-known retro classics do you look back on with fond memories- any from the ones I've listed, or others entirely?

well my list of of retro games that i anjoyed/enjoy playing is:

Rampage: Monsters going around a city destroying everything in site, need i say more,

Warlords: Very old 4 player game like allyway but you have to protect your corner blocks from being hit while destroying your opponets walls, very cool,

Outrun: cool convertable, hot blonde in passenger seat, miles upon miles off road, what else do you need,

Double Dragon, if you dont know what this is were have you bin LOL,

Ghoast and ghouls: Very cool game,

Alex the kid: very good game and came free with the master system consol,

Toejam and Earl: two weird alians going around having a good time,

Lords of the relm: Old stratagy simulation game based in medieval times,

Rocks and Gems: Very addictive puzzler,

And countless more that i cant remember.

To this day, I still pretty much enjoy playing all of the old Sonic the Hedgehog games, and other great titles such as James Pond II: Robocod, Altered Beast, Echo the Dolphin, Streets of Rage, and the other Mega Drive classics that I loved to play.

my favourite old school games were

earthworm jim: it was great to launch the cow lol

jazz jackrabbit: i still have this game on my computer lol

I used to love my Sega Master System. Does anyone remember Alec the Kid? it was built into the system. I used to love that game, as well as Sonic the Hedgehog, but for some reason, the old Sonic games just aren't as much fun anymore :(

i have the sonic mega collection on the ps2 and i mainly play on the first sonic game on it but there are some really crappy games on it lol
one game only takes three steps and you finish the level

My favourite old retro games ( some of which are probably not underated )

Elite : I had this on some really knackered old computer that ran off tapes , was a fantastic space sim , and with a lot of depth even if it was merely line graphics. The manual was huge and like a brick.

Shootout : Can't actually remember this games full name but it was basically two cowboys you played as ( each using half the keyboard ) , and youd move up and down trying to shoot each other. Was on the old tape based computer too.

New Zealand Story : This game on the NES was so bizarre it gave me nightmares , you played some kiwi bird , and had to travel around New Zealand shooting arrows at killer koalas and bears on balloons. There was a boss that seemed invincible on it that I never beat.

Sparkster:last of The Rocket Knights : Was on the SNES , so im not sure if it was really retro but I loved this game. Flying round with a little jetpack thing on your back and battling aliens.

Solar Jetman : Had this on the NES , I think it was actually made by Rare , before they took on the Rare brand name ( but I could be wrong ) . Incredibly difficult game where you flew round various planets battling aliens and collecting enough fuel , rocket parts and upgrades to progress to the next planet. It was fiendishly tricky to drag the parts you found back to your ship without crashing.

All great games, god i miss me old mega drive.

Repton on the BBC

Cannon Fodder on the Amega

Gynoug on the Megadrive

Splatterhouse also on the megadrive

Oh and Mario Paint on the SNES

And, sorry to be contraversial MangaMinx, but I have to confess to a dark hatred for Elite. My old man used to drive me nuts hogging the BBC playing that and the Setinel (and Snowball, god damn that game)

You have all made excellent choices for your fav retro games, I hame most of them as roms. I still regularly play Sonic & Knuckles, it has to be my fav retro game. I first played at when I lived in New Zealand (New Zealand Story on the Master System is another fav  ) at a friend's sleepover. We stayed up all night taking turns to finish it.

i remembver NZS! i had it on my old Amiga machine from way back (it's still stashed away in a box somewhere). i was a fan of Zool as well - the little ninja ant guy who went after lolipops. you really did need to be on a sugar rush to keep up with it!

i also remember the original Lemmings, Magic Pockets and James Pond 2: Robocod. good times. :)

Gunstar Heroes: A fiendishly addictive shooter from reknowned side-scroller treasure, you could mix and match guns to make some truly devastating weapons and the boss battles were suitably frenzied epic affairs.

Rolling Thunder 3: Another fairly simple shooter, you simply marched through the level killing baddies but could hide behind barrels and take potshots just like in the movies.

Street Fighter II Turbo: I had a dangerous obsession with this when it first appeared on the mega drive, I used to sit there with my bandaged thumbs and play for hours.

I loved the bosses in Gunstar Heroes. My fav was the one you fight while on a train track.

I remember the most irritating game that i played....was the classic tetris for gameboy....it was so annoying...cause it was addicting. I have all the old sonic games and i still go on them....they are great. DO any of you remember duck hunt on the NES? i thought that was a good game that.

Duck Hunt was ACE! I also used to love Bionic Commando on the NES.
I am still unbeaten on the NHL/NHLPA games on the megadrive. I had them all, 93 to 97 and never got beaten :p

Other classics that I liked:
Festers Quest (NES)
Excite Bike (NES)
ZELDA: Link to the past (SNES)
FlashBack (SEGA)- god, I loved this!
Super Mario Brothers (NES)
Super Mario World (SNES)
Super Mario Kart (SNES)
Zombies ate my Neighbours (SEGA)
SIM-City (SNES)
Akira (NES)
StarFox (SNES)
