Twin Spica is the story of Asumi Kamogawa, a young girl who dreams of becoming a rocket driver [sic]. Encouraged and helped by Lion-san, the ghost of an astronaut, Asumi joins a newly started astronaut training course in order to realise her dream.
This is, if not one of the best dramatic anime ever made, certainly one of the most underrated. There were only a handful of episodes that didn't make me cry, as there is always something traumatic being revealed about someone's past.
It isn't depressing, though; despite all these hardships, there is always a thread of hope present.
It's a wonderfully touching series, and should definitely be watched if you like that sort of thing. Don't ever try it without having tissues at hand, though.
