Death Scythe
A midnight news report on the AnimeNewsNetwork <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-10-31/funimation-adds-ghost-hunt-anime-by-12-kingdoms-author">announced</a> that Funimation have licensed the anime adaptation of Shido Inada's shoujo manga <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=5466">"Ghost Hunt",</a> which is in turn adapted from the original novel series - "Akuryo Series" (also known as "Evil Spirit") from the renowned author <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuyumi_Ono">Fuyumi Ono</a>.

<a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6817">Ghost Hunt</a> follows the story of a high school girl Mai Taniyama, who gets caught up in paranormal activities and ends up being the assistant of a member of a psychic research centre. The adventure follows both these characters as they travel through Japan, encountering situations related to Asian folklore and European mythology.

Originally airing in Japan from October 2006, the 25-episode series will begin its release sometime in the Autumn of 2008 for America.  Revelation have yet to announce the series, but as they are the official UK representatives of Funimation it is assumed that an announcement will appear at a later stage.  It is also to be noted that Tanoshimi release the manga in the UK.

Apologies for the messed up post.
I was having problems connecting to the site last night, then my internet dies just after I post the news item! I nearly lost the title and the finishing edits, but luckily I remembered them - the first time it lost contact.
Anyway, it should be all good now.

I researched this for a long time last night; there's a pathetic amount of information about the novel series, with conflicting information from virtually everything I read about it. I can assure you though, I have presented the hard facts about it, without figures though (which were the main thing that conflicted). To end the little rant, it'd help if ANN would write more clearly, many a time I've been stuck reading their news items over and over trying to make sense of what they're saying. They say that the anime is adapted from Shido Inada, and Fuyumi Ono's manga series, Ghost Hunt, which is technically true, as the manga was based on Fuyumi's novels, but from what I can gather, Fuyumi didn't help write the manga, Shido was the manga-ka, so I went off on a tangent to begin with, and I think anyone else reading the news item would read it the same way, it's not like information on Ghost Hunt is widely known, the novels are nearly 20 years old now.

Anyway, onwards and upwards.

As a massive Fuyumi Ono fan myself, I'm delighted that I'll get to see this series at some point. I've read very positive things about it, and it's animated by J.C. Staff as well (Shana!), and apparently has some awesome and very relevant music to the series (spooky music!), along with brilliant animation (as expected from J.C. Staff). I've heard many a time actually that this series is something out of the ordinary so to speak, which is the effect all of Fuyumi's works seem to have; entralling stories, I seriously can't wait! It seems to be set out in story arcs as well, just like Twelve Kingdoms was, which is awesome as well. And, there is apparently room for a second season, so I'm guessing the anime doesn't cover all the manga, which is awesome. Also, Fuyumi finished the original novel series, the books however are untranslated and out of print, or so I've heard, which is a great shame. On the other hand, she's apparently revising one of her earlier creations and hinted to it being a childhood horror series, or something, which indicates her original novel series. So that's awesome as well; I just hope she finishes 12k as well.

Yeah, so enough of my blabbering; I could write all day about this, but I'm absolutely exhausted, so I'm signing off, again - apologies for the messed up post, and for my messed up comment! *falls flat on the keyboard*

Melonpan,

Speaking as a big fan of Ghost Hunt, I can divulge a bit of information that you may not know. The anime follows the manga closely, however, both the anime and manga only touch the surface of the story. There are hints droppend throughout the anime (more so in the manga) but the novels focus on Naru and his quest. I can't tell you more than that without any spoilers, but the novels are alot more complex. (I have a word doc which tells the real story, if you want it let me know and I will PM it to you)

Originally, the story was supposed to ends at vol 9. However, due to the series success an additional book was written under the 'white heart' series as opposed to the 'evil spirits' one. Which hasn't been translated. I do hope Ono picks up the story again as Ghost Hunt is by far one of the most interesting manga's I've read.

And let's be honest, it's always fun to make fun of Naru. :)

Thanks a lot for the info =) That does clear some things up (I heard the 9 volumes a lot), how many of this "White Heart" thing are there, if you know?
I really do hope Tokyopop pick this up to release as the novel form - would be awesome to have two Fuyumi novel series being released together (annually, but each coming half a year after the other would be perfect). Let's also hope the "rewriting of a childhood story" turns out to be more of Ghost Hunt as well.
As for a word document thing about it, I'd love to have a look if it explains the book order, but not if it's all about the story - thanks a lot for the offer =).

Sweet :D . Watched the it a few months ago and it is one of the best examples of character development and arced story telling I've seen in a long time.

Have you seen "The Twelve Kingdoms"?
No. Good I take it.

Well, it's from the same person who made Ghost Hunt, and the anime is spread out the same as Ghost Hunt with the whole story arc thing (but properly spaced), massive character development. So yeah, recommended massively.

As far as I can tell, the White Heart series has one book. And yes, that word doc has some major spoilers, so if you don't want to ruin the surprise, it's best to avoid it. In the said doc it does say she's thinking of rewriting an old girl's horror story - which sounds very much like Ghost Hunt to me.
