Not a Transformers fan, but if i was this would be the sweetest news. I might pick up a special edition one and see if its worth anything later on, or just keep it.

'remastered into widescreen format'
I wonder what this involves, surely if something is filmed in 4:3, zooming will be required to some degree to make it fit a 16:9 aspect

Usually they just crop it meaning they cut the top and bottom of the picture off to make it 16:9.

Funi did it with the DBZ DVD's and the fanboys were up in arms about it.

It does seem a stupid move, no doubt to please the idiot masses who don't like black borders down the side of their picture, so instead watch 4:3 material stretched so everyone has deformed heads and wiiiide shoulders

I doubt there's any chance of them just stretching the picture. If anything companies just crop things which is annoying in some ways if you've seen it before and know what's missing. Others who havent might not even notice the change.

I'm not suggesting they would I'm saying there's a lot of people out there with widescreen tvs who just stretch 4:3 images to fit the screen

I do that and why not, you don't even notice after about a minute or so.

everytime a new version of the film comes on vhs or dvd i get tempted to purchase it, but this definatley has made me sure that the special edition version will be bought without question.

The movie was made in widescreen so it makes sense that they could/would easily use the original masters and remaster it into current anamorphic widescreen formats, which is probably what they have done. Unlike DBZ, which was made in 4:3 for TV, the Transformers movie was made for cinema in widescreen.

I'm not gonna say you are wrong given I don't understand all this negatve ratio/intended ratio business involved with film however given that it says disc 2 offers 'Original 4:3 version of the movie' and that it's being remastered into a 16:9 widescreen format, I am sceptical

I have that set, I got it when Sony released it in North America in Novemeber, the remastering is beautiful, and yes Spike does say "Sh-t" in this version or atleast the NA release had, and for some clarity, Disc 1 contains the WideScreen edition, the second has the Remastered version of the movie in FullScreen.

Like the DBZ fans, us Transformers fans had an uproar on the fact of the WideScreen, as apparently the movie for some reason was animated, or filmed in 4:3, but afterwards the uproar ended as we found out that the movie would be on DVD remasted with FullScreen in the same set as the WideScreen. No clue why you guys will also be getting a 1 Disc release, as that didn't happen here.

Oh ya, if any of you get it, mind telling me if the Scramble City has just the commentary on it like our release did? And we didn't get the booklet either, or the tin, but I recall Metrodome saying that they were releasing the Sony version(The latest 20th Anniversary Release of the Film, out last November in NA) with their own goodies.

Nice, I'll be sure to pick this up. I got the U-rated version for a couple of quid, only realising it was cut when I watched it, but this'll make for a nice replacement.
