There seems to be a lot cut and pasting of the old series going on with this, with a few added new stuff sprinkled in. It looks like they are over-egging the pudding again and I think I hear Anno laughing again too. :roll:

I would guess that it probably IS relevant in some way. Asuka's surname now has the same last kanji as Rei's. I doubt they would make this change if there wasn't some relevance to it.
