Top Favourite Anime of the Year (2024 Update)

Pokémon Master
I wasn't sure if there was a better thread for this so I decided to make one. I briefly wanted to go over my top anime of last year and would be interested in others as well.

Seeing as I finished Pluto and Horimiya S2 yesterday and we're still early into 2024, thought it was best to do it now.

For my list I was going to do a top ten but there were so many great shows this year I upped it to fifteen. There was also a number of shows I did start but didn't get far into them and at this point I will restart them so some will be missing such as Oshi no Ko for example. There is of course many others shows I missed in general and want to watch still such as 100 Girlfriends but I can't watch everything as it airs 😅

Honourable Mentions

Bungo Stray Dogs (Season 4) - Considering both S4 and S5 released the same year, I didn't want to include it without watching S5 yet.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, The Apothecary Diaries and Undead Unluck - With all three of these series continuing into 2024 (with Undead Unluck being on a delaycast for the U.K. on top of that), I didn't want to include them in this years list but the former two will definitely makes 2024's and Undead Unluck has a promising start so far.

15. Trigun Stampede
- Studio Orange did a fantastic job on this, the story didn't grab me the entire time but the animation sold this show for me.

14. Hell's Paradise
- A solid shounen series with a creepy atmosphere, looking forward to the second season.

13. Skip and Loafer
- An adorable slice of life with arguably my favourite art style of the year. I would had put it higher but I preferred other similar series over this.

12. Horimiya: The Missing Pieces
- Loved spending more time with these characters, glad the skipped chapters got adapted.

11. Tokyo Revengers (Season 2 + 3)
- A series I continue to enjoy a lot despite how silly it can get with certain aspects. I feel S3 was the weakest which may have dropped this a few places but still a great time personally.

10. Tomo-chan Is a Girl!
- A standout comedy series, this was a lot of fun to watch each week, all I can say really.

09. Rent-A-Girlfriend (Season 3)
- My guilty pleasure show, might not be as good as the other slice of life / romance shows on this list but damn, do I love watching it.

08. Lupin the Third vs. Cat's Eye
- A lot of people here know I love my Lupin so of course I had to include this movie. Though I was always interested in Cat's Eye, this finally got me into the series which I have to thank this movie for. I really appreciated how they tied the lore of both series together as well, making it feel very natural. It did a better job than the Detective Conan crossovers IMO (even though I enjoy them as well).

07. Pokemon Concierge
- A wonderful little stop-motion series, so cute and relaxing, a surprise gem for the year.

06. Pluto
- Naoki Urasawa's take on Astro Boy was just as great as I'd heard about all these years.

05. KonoSuba! An Explosion on this Wonderful World!
- This is only so high because of bias, though weaker than the main series, I adore KonoSuba! and Megumin is my favourite character from the series so I loved this a lot. Was nice to see Yunyun get more of a spotlight here as well.

04. Spy x Family (Season 2)
- Spy x Family continues to be a modern favourite of mine and that won't be stopping anytime soon.

03. Urusei Yatsura (2022)
- Starting in 2022 but finishing in 2023 this was my first experience with the series and this made me laugh a lot with how bonkers it is. It's a very visually pleasing show as well.

02. Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead
- Ever since the first trailer I knew I was going to fall in love with this series and I was right on the money. Like a lot of my top picks, they just ooze fun which is what I want from a show most of the time. Another visually pleasing show as well.

01. Attack on Titan: The Final Season - The Final Chapters
- The controversial pick for sure but I was a fan of the ending and this finale kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. There's only ever been a few anime which have made me feel like I did watching these, so they are always truly special to me and which is why it is my number one for the year.

was just looking to see if someone had made a thread about this!
still some shows to catch up on (e.g. Pluto, Spy x Family s2) so don't know how to order them yet, but:

Frieren, Apothecary & Vinland S2 were a cut above the rest, just all round great shows
also enjoyed Insomniacs, Heavenly Delusion, Kaina, Gundam Mercury, Undead Murder Farce, Ooku

probably forgot some, but would happily buy blus of any of the above!

A little late to the party, just saw this thread today, but I thought I would add my "Top Twenty" list of favorite anime of 2023. I'm mostly into Romance and Fantasy/Isekai series. Theres a few more Romance series I have yet to finish from the year, so I have to leave them off the list for now. These are pretty much listed in order

1. My Happy Marriage
2. The Apothecary Diaries
3. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
4. Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts
5. The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent Season 2
6. The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at Duke's Mansion
7. Sugar Apple Fairy Tale
8. Loving Yamada-kun at lv999
9. Insomniacs After School
10. A Girl & Her Guard Dog
11. Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari
12. The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2
13. BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defences Season 2
14. Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire
15. The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World
16. The Reincarnation Of The Strongest Exorcist In Another World
17. Farming Life in Another World
18. The Great Cleric
19. The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy
20. Berserk of Gluttony

Updated this thread from last year to go over my favourite anime of this year.

I have been really bad at finishing anime this year and I am ashamed in myself I still haven't finished the three honourable mentions from last year that I didn't include as they started airing in 2023 but didn't finish until this year being Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, The Apothecary Diaries and Undead Unluck (though I made a good amount of progress on the latter).

For new honourable mentions though I'll definitely have to go with Dragon Ball Daima as that hasn't finished airing yet as well as Beastars: Final Season (Part 1) as the second part isn't out yet plus I still have four episodes of Part 1 to watch anyway.

Ranma 1/2 (2024), though I only have a couple of episodes left to watch I won't include it as I won't get the chance to finish it today within this year but it has been great to finally experience this classic series in some form.

Other anime I started this year I haven't watched many episodes of yet so I've left them out of this section.

10. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Hashira Training Arc
- Though the weakest season IMO it set-up well for the finale and the last two episodes were fantastic which helped it squeeze into the top ten for me.

09. My Oni Girl
- This movie was a nice surprise, I thought I'd enjoy it enough but this was actually a really enjoyable time for me.

08. Look Back
- This was a great shorter movie about becoming a mangaka and clearly had a lot of passion put into this movie.

07. Sand Land: The Series
- I read Sand Land quite a long time ago so I was really happy when this got an anime adaptation and from memory of the manga it was a great adaptation and the new arc exclusive to the anime I feel I enjoyed even more. It is always great to see other non-DB works from Toriyama get adapted and I hope more do in the future.

06. Black Butler: Public School Arc
- I never thought we was going to get more Black Butler at this point so I was so happy to be proven wrong. It was a great time being back with this series and I enjoyed this arc quite a lot, looking forward to the next season for sure.

05. Spy x Family CODE: White
- I'm a big Spy x Family fan and being able to see it on the big screen was definitely a satisfying experience. Like the series this has all the elements which make Spy x Family so enjoyable for me so this was an easy highlight for me this year.

04. Astro Note
- Since I saw the artwork for this series it intrigued me and what we got was a quirky slice of life, comedy-romance with sci-fi elements inspired by the likes of Rumiko Takahashi's works such as Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku. Definitely a hidden gem of the year.

03. KonoSuba! God's Blessing on this Wonderful World! (S3)
- I could of easily let my bias take over and put this at number one as this is my second favourite series of all time but the top two were very special titles so I held back. Season 3 of KonoSuba was fantastic though and might even be my favourite season, I was laughing so much at every episode, definitely gave me a lot of enjoyment each week which is the main thing I want from a show.

02. Blue Giant
- This was such a beautiful movie, I was mesmerised at some of the performances in the cinema just as the audience were in the movie. I have no jazz background of any sorts but I appreciate the genre a lot, even before this movie with other films but this definitely made me appreciate it even further more. Really waiting on AL to release it on blu-ray as I'm itching to re-watch it.

01. Delicious in Dungeon
- This is definitely a top title for a lot of people this year and for good reason, it was a fantastic series from start to finish with great art and animation and such a loveable cast of characters you really connect with and enjoy spending time with and when it was all over, it felt like I was really missing something from my week, especially after watching it for 6 months.

Though KonoSuba gave me more laughs and Blue Giant made me feel more emotion, Delicious in Dungeon was the full course (pun intended) which is why it's my top title for the year though all of my top three are definitely worthy.

My top 10 anime this year ended up being (in no particular order after the top two):

Oblivion Battery
Wind Breaker
Makeine
Dungeon Meshi
A Sign of Affection
Wistoria: Wand and Sword
Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
Yozakura Family
Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night
Cherry Magic!

It was a good year for adaptations, honestly. I was familiar with quite a few of these prior to the anime, but Oblivion Battery. Dungeon Meshi and Makeine were entirely new to me in any form and I completely fell in love with them all. It was great to see A Sign of Affection made into anime with such love and care too, if only more shojo series were treated to that amount of attention. ^^;

My top 10 for 2024 in alphabetical but not ranked order:

Bartender: Glass of God
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Conflict
Dungeon Meshi
Kingdom 5th Season
Monogatari Series: OFF & Monster Season
Natsume’s Book of Friends Season 7
Ooi!, Tonbo 2nd Season
Sengoku Youko 2nd Season
Shangri-La Frontier
TSUKIMICHI -Moonlit Fantasy- 2nd Season

I would count Frieren but that began in 2023, otherwise it would be at the top.
