This year marks 35 years since the debut of Sunrise's <em>Mobile Suit Gundam</em> anime, which would go on to spark a huge multimedia franchise, so of course, Sunrine will want to commemorate the occasion. The seventh episode of <em>Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn</em> opened in cinemas in Japan last month, a four episode adaptation of the manga <em>Gundam: The Origin</em> will open in Japanese cinemas next Spring and of course, it was announced that franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino will be returning to the franchise to helm <strong>Gundam: Reconguista in G</strong>; marking his return to the franchise following the 2005-2006 <em>Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam</em> film trilogy.
In an interview with the Japanese "Anime Busience" magazine, the seventy-two year old confirmed that the series is currently planned to run for two "seasons", which unless it later gets a second season like 2007's <em>Mobile Suit Gundam 00</em> and last year's <em>Gundam Build Fighters</em>, will make it the shortest TV anime in the franchise. <em>Gundam: Reconguista in G</em> will premiere this Autumn - the same time that the sequel series to <em>Gundam Build Fighters</em> is slated to air.
The series, which was previously revealed in March, is set in the "Reguild Century", which takes place after the franchise's well known Universal Century. <em>Gundam: Reconguista in G</em> follows Beruri Zenamu, a trainee pilot in the Capital Guard, an organisation dedicated to protecting a space elevator.
Ken'ichi Yoshia (<em>Eureka Seven</em>) will be in charge of designing the characters, while the series' titular mechs will be designed by Akira Yasuda (<em>Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion</em>), Ippei Gyobo (<em>Sacred Seven</em>) and Kimitoshi Yamane (<em>Cowboy Bebop</em>,<em> Mobile Suit Gundam SEED</em>). The soundtrack will be scored by Yuugo Kanno (<em>JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders</em>, <em>Psycho-Pass</em>).
