Computer games and money were taken by raiders during a break-in at a new rest area for teenagers with cancer in Birmingham.

Equipment valued at more than £4,000 went from the new Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) conservatory and a children's ward at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

The facilities are due to open this weekend after a £250,000 refurbishment.

Items were also found to be damaged after the incident between Sunday night and Monday morning, the hospital said.

The conservatory will give teenagers respite from treatment in a social room including a jukebox, laptops and kitchen facilities, when it opens for the first time at the weekend.

It has been paid for entirely by the TCT, a charity which helps teenagers with cancer, the hospital said.

The children's ward will reopen at the weekend following the refurbishment.

Deputy chief executive at the hospital Graham Bragg said the incident was "quite distressing for staff".

He added: "They're just getting ready to move back into the facility after the refurbishment.

"Computer games and consoles were stolen, a digital camera and indeed £400 cash."

He said tapes from the hospital's CCTV cameras have been given to police.
