Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises has been nominated for this year's Academy Award for "Best Animated Feature".

The Wind Rises will face Disney film Frozen, DreamWorks feature The Croods, sequel Despicable Me 2 and French-Belgian film Ernest & Celestine.

Anime fans will be hoping that Miyazaki will be able to succeed with his nomination, replicating the success of Spirited Away, currently the only film to win the "Best Animated Feature" Oscar in a foreign language.

The Wind Rises is a historical fantasy film loosely based on the real life of Jiro Horikoshi (originally voiced by Hideaki Anno, director and writer of Neon Genesis Evangelion), an aeroplane designer who created the Mitsubishi A5M and its more famous successor the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, which were both aircraft that were used by Japan in the Second World War.

The 2014 Academy Awards will be presented on 2nd March.

I hope this film beats Frozen. So many people want Frozen to win (as well as it's original song, which I'll guess Happy could get from Despicable Me 2) and never even heard of Wind Rises.

If Wind Rises wins, then that will make my day though some people may not be pleased due to the film's theme and setting.

I guess if everyone tells them Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the main voice in the English dub then people may change their minds (haha).

I still want to know the release date for this in the UK. Hope the Japanese version gets released in cinemas with subs considering Anno is in it.

BTW, does the Studio Canal blu ray for Porco Rosso have the French dub? If it does, I'll get it, if it doesn't, I'll get the Japanese blu ray.

I don't even know who Joseph Gordon-Levitt is.

In terms of films he has been in the likes of Inception, Dark Knight Rises and (500) Day of Summer while he has also appeared in 3rd Rock from the Sun on TV.

The Wind Rises has some stiff competition from Despicable Me 2 and Frozen. I guess me and Mum won't be friends until the Oscar season is over (she's vying for Despicable Me 2).

I knew Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion wasn't going to be on the list. As much as I love Madoka, Aniplex were stupid with that one.

A film about a man designing a plane which slaughtered so many americans will never win an oscar. Speaking of which, my cynicism meter has just exploded.

Madoka doesn't have Miyazaki levels of appeal is the trouble.

Of the list I've only had the chance to see Frozen and I think it's a fairly strong entry, good set piece song, deviates nicely from the tired old setup and ending.

No need to worry. As soon as they figure out it's a tribute to the man what designed the Zero which was the plane that bombed Pearl Harbour, it too will be shot down in flames like the plane itself.

To be fair, the guy the film is about invented the predecessor to the Zero, not the Zero itself.

Actually he and his team went onto develop the Zero so I'm afraid that's not correct. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiro_Horikoshi

Regardless of that fact the Oscar Judges should be looking beyond historical grievances and judging a film based on it's merits.

Horikoshi did later go on to work on the more well known Mitsubishi A6M (Zero) but the subject matter of The Wind Rises is the Type 96 Mitsubishi A5M, known as the "Claude". Both planes were used in World War 2 though, so eh, it's not a big deal.

I believe that is already the case, if the award recognition garnered by Letters from Iwo Jima is anything to go by. The only reason for me to suspect foul play would be if Despicable Me 2 takes the title, underwritten and underdeveloped as it is.
