For a long time now I've meant to get a PSP...and a PS3...and a HD TV...and a decent computer. I've kept putting it off because I rarely play games these days. However, with the recent release of Star Ocean 1 and upcoming release of SO2, along with older releases such as Crisis Core, it's getting harder to resist buying myself a PSP to play them with. The SO2 looks great with the new anime artwork and cut-scenes.

Anyway, a few questions:

1: How would you rate the following...

Star Ocean 1
Star Ocean 2 (PSP)
FFVII: Crisis Core
Wild Arms: XF
Tales of Eternia
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology
Valk Profile (PSP)
Breath of Fire 3 (PSP)

2: How would I go about hooking the PSP up to my TV? I don't want to make my eyes worse than they already are by using the small PSP screen to play. I think there's an RGB scart adapter you can get?

3: Are there any decent deals out there? I don't like the idea of buying a games console used but never see any tempting bundles/prices for a new PSP. The games I want to play on it are limited to RPGs and that means that most bundle offers do nothing for me.

You need a component cable to connect the PSP to a TV. Though I haven't personally tried it, I can't imagine that it'll look very good due to the console's low resolution.

The only games I've played from your list are Valkyrie Profile, which is a port of the PS1 version, and Crisis Core. The latter is a decent game but the plot is so ridiculous and overwraught that I ended up paying very little attention to it. Having said that, the main character, Zack, is a hugely likeable lead, and there are some genuinely touching moments between him and Aerith. Also, the ending is wrenching.

I love my PSP. Need to buy Dissidia after my birthday so I can massacre my least favourite FF characters. Hardware wise I think it's vastly superior to my DS (just lacking some of the amazing DS-only games).

I've weirdly only played the same games as fabricatedlunatic in PSP form.

I liked VP though the horrific English voice acting made me want to cry. It's awful. The game looks lovely though and is a solid RPG. Didn't change my life yet had fun with it.

Crisis Core was very good and I'm ashamed to say I cried from the story. It's not very hard at all (the main storyline was easier I'd say than even a normal recent FF RPG) though there are lots of side missions you can leap into at any time for bite-sized challenges of varying difficulty - perfect in my case for the morning tube journey. Music was excellent. Mine was the Japanese version so I can't comment on the dubbed voice acting. Zack is much more awesome in general than Cloud ever was.

If there's no PSP scart apapter then that isn't so good when my TV is a CRT. I suppose it was a bit unrealistic to expect anything other than a component cable when most people have an LCD TV these days. The idea of playing the SO2 remake on my PSP when I can play the PS1 version on my TV isn't so tempting.

I wish I'd picked titles such as VP: L when they were cheap - it isn't sold new now and the second hand price has risen as a result. I have the PS1 version but I still would've liked the PSP version because I think it has animated cut-scenes and voice acting...

I'll probably like Crisis Core quite a bit, me being a bit of a FFVII fanboy and all. I know I like Zack - he was awesome in Last Order and made it into a great little OVA with his insanely likeable personality. The only thing that's ever put me off playing Crisis Core (aside from my lack of PSP) is that the SE staff can't write a decent story if their lives depended on it these days, as the Advent Children 'story' showed very clearly... I fully expect the filler added to extend the game to be horrible.

Update:

Over the last few days I've done what I should've been doing months back: picked up some PSP bargains. I'm a collector, so getting games before I can play them isn't odd for me.

So far, my eBay bargain hunting has allowed me to get...

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (SE)
Breath of Fire III (sealed)

Since I now have an actual need for a PSP, I'd appreciate it if you let me know if you happen to see a good deal for the PSP. :D

GAME are doing a Slim & Lite plus a free game -- the best of which is probably God of War -- for £110.

Bear in mind that you'll need a memory stick; Sony helpfully decided not to include one with the console.

Breath of Fire III seems like it could have been a good game but the loading times completely spoiled it for me :/

Crisis Core, on the other hand, is brilliant in every respect :]

Tale of Eternia was a great game to me. Cliche story and cringeworthy dub, but it has a enjoyable battle system and some nice soundtracks.

I played quite a bit on Crisis Core on my cousin's PSP and suffice to say, I didn't like it.

Actually, I think it's overrated because magic hardly felt useful and it all result down to mashing X, which gives me bad memories of KH2 ¬¬ I think it's a little bit better, but other than that...

it can die in a ditch for all I care. Crisis Core was bad by my standards.

The PSP for £100 + £10 (how my mind worked it out) for a non-RPG doesn't strike me as a great deal. The PSP was £100 when I looked into getting it last year. I don't really want to pay £100 for a portable PSP (I'd only play it inside anyway - I'd lose focus outside) in order to play one game for the first time. ;___;

Breath of Fire III is a game I loved back when I was REALLY into games. It was a bit silly of me picking it up when I already own a NTSC copy - the PSP version doesn't, as far as I know, have any upgrades aside from a few to the fishing mini-game. Knowing me, I'll probably just leave it sealed and look at the lovely artwork.

Without even touching it, I know I won't rate Crisis Core too highly. What I've read about the story in other reviews and seen of Square Enix's ability to create stories of late doesn't fill me with much hope. Ironically, I'm looking forward to playing it just for the end.
On the brightside, getting the SE means I won't care a great deal if it does suck. I can feel good about owning the now OOP set and flick through the art book in order to make myself feel better.

Square have not made a truly great game since FFIX. The first KH was quite good but was really just created to drain the cash of Square and Disney tards worldwide. It goes without saying that KH2 was a poor attempt at a sequel.

As for Tales of Eternia, today I came to the realization that I actually already own it - I didn't know that it's a port of ToDII, a game I own but have never got around to playing. I'll still pick it up because it's a RPG, though.

You might have been looking at the old PSP - you'll be lucky to find a new Slim & Lite for less than £110. Why don't you try eBay?

Also, I recommend looking out for a copy of Jeanne d'Arc, a strategy RPG by Level 5. Best game on the system for me.
