They might appear mere anime characters, but these two virtual police officers have been created by the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau to combat online pornography and other Web activity considered illicit.

In what's just China's latest attempt to clamp down on the Internet, the animated beat officers will pop up--either on a motorcycle, in a car or on foot--to warn surfers on Chinese sites that they are being monitored, Reuters said.

Beginning Saturday, they will appear every half hour on computer screens run by 13 major Beijing-based portals, Reuters said.

i heard about that on the radio just yesterday, i can't remember everything they are monitoriing, though i think one other was sites that where about superstitious beliefs, something making people believe them. i ask why about that =/, still i guess its a good idea in a way.

Chinese internet laws are so funny...I did a bit on them in my degree work, and I really couldn't believe the stuff they block - just really harmless stuff like music sites.

I think there's a site that got posted here a few months ago where you could enter a URL and see if it's blocked in China or not...some daft stuff is blocked (I don't think wrestling would really destroy their society!), but some..er..."naughty" sites seem to be fair game.

Not that I know about those kinda sites...of course. >_>

Both scary and amusing, i really don't know what my reaction would be if an animated police officer appeared on my screen and told me to stop viewing a site.

Won't most people just think its another pop-up? Or better yet, think its some sort of game and try to shoot the policeman with their mouse ala that animation vs animator flash cartoon? :D
