The otaku

Is out of here

Great Teacher
The otaku, the passionate obsessive, the information age's embodiment of the connoisseur, more concerned with the accumulation of data than of objects, seems a natural crossover figure in today's interface of American and Japanese cultures. I see it in the eyes of the Portobello dealers, and in the eyes of the Japanese collectors: a perfectly calm train-spotter frenzy, murderous and sublime. Understanding otaku -hood, I think, is one of the keys to understanding the culture of the web. There is something profoundly post-national about it, extra-geographic. We are all curators, in the post-modern world, whether we want to be or not.

Yes it is.............heres another interesting post (but lets not turn it into a debate eh) I just think its a dam good post.

You apparently LIVE in a place where you can view American TV for free. I live in a place where I can view American TV for free &, because of the large Hispanic population here, there's a lot of Spanish channels. So yeah, I can watch Lost for "free" & because of my location, my $80 per month "free" U-Verse TV cable package also allows me to see all of the Starz & Showtime channels so I really don't need to bother with renting movies & I can see all the Hispanic tv I might want to see (if I ever learn spanish. It is REALLY fun to watch their dubs which sound so over-the-top. I was watching one for 5 minutes, thinking everything sounded like life or death & finally figured out it was one of the Beethovan movies)

But what if I move?
What if I go somewhere without a large Hispanic community which doesn't see the need for a dozen or so spanish channels? How on earth would I get my fix for Mexican TV?
I guess I would have to RENT the dvds or even BUY them SIGHT UNSEEN (HORRORS!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! THE INHUMANITY OF IT ALL)

UNDERSTAND--
We have all picked up an expensive hobby. We have all discovered we like a television product that isn't available in our native country. The INSANE part it most of you seem to believe you have some sort of right to view these shows that are not made for your consumption. YOU are supposed to watch the tv made for your country. You have no right to shows made in Japan if you do not live there. You have no right to watch Mexican Soap Operas (an addictive thing, I hear) if you do not live in Mexico or someplace with a Spanish channel that is willing to air that show. You have no right to Dr Who or any of the British shows if you do not live in the UK or someplace that has purchased that title for airing

Unless you pay for the dvds/videotapes/whatever.

Yes, my god, the Japanese can watch all the anime they want for free. And you can watch all the American stuff you want for free if you live here or British tv if you live there or French tv if you live there, etc.

This is how it works in the world. People living in France do not have the right to see all the American shows they want for free. People in China do not have the right to see all the Korean shows for free. You do realize there are people around the world who would LOVE to be able to choose to see Lost on tv for free.

We all have an expensive hobby. Live with it. Rent the dvds if you don't want to buy them.

I really don't see why ANYONE would need to watch fansubs of Slayers Revolution when all the box sets are available for a lot less than the $70 a pop I paid from CPM ages ago. Slayers is Slayers. YOu don't need to watch Revolution to know what it's about.

My SN here is the same as the one I use on G4 (I have Faust as my icon there) THere was a thread for posting one's collections & I posted all 2000 of my dvds & all 2000 of my manga. As we speak
Bleach set 2 is on it's way to me so yes I do buy anime all the time

I have never ever watched a fansub. I still have the hardest time understanding why so many people are unable to judge their own tastes that the feel the need to watch not just 1 ep, but an entire series to make a decision on it. How do you decide what to eat in a restaurant you've never been in? How do you decide to see a movie in a theater? I usually know what I want to see before it hits the theaters just as I usually know what anime & manga I want to buy before they hit the streets. (all the yaoi-easy)

AS I SAY DO NOT TURN INTO DEBATE JUST READ IT.........its very good

You post something and tell us we're not allowed to debate it? Screw that. Do you even know what a forum is for?

Regardless, that was really preachy and whoever did just doesn't want to understand fansubs. The holier than thou attitudes like this piss me off to no end.
