Despite the large number of anime series being released in the UK every month, there are still many shows that are yet to even see a stateside release. "The Great Unwashed Anime" is a chance for our team of anime addicts to give you a taster of some of the series that are currently restricted to Japanese shores; from the latest and greatest anime to the overlooked and forgotten, this unlicensed anime spotlight should whet the appetite of any curious anime fans.

A very interesting article - i hope it does beccome a regualr thing.

If the Blackjack series is anywhere near as good as the film, it's worth looking out for. :D

As I say in the piece, it's very different. If you go in expecting more of the same, you may be disappointed. The series is much lighter in tone and visuals, with character designs that are closer to Tezuka's originals (think Metropolis, another Tezuka work).

Personally, I rate the film a bit higher than the series; I preferred the dark conspiracy-theory story to the sometimes overly-fluffy moments of the series. That being said, the series is charming and endearing in its own way. All I can say is give it a shot, see how you like it; the first episode is a double-bill, and gives a pretty good indication of things to come.

cheers for the info. there were a few cartoony 'Tezuka-esque' characters in the film if i recall. i'll try to track some of these down.

I think this a great idea, why should the reviews be restricted to western reviews, and you never know, it could help to get them a bit of extra attention from any companies thinking of a new license
