The first step to global anime releases.

Death Scythe
Bandai Visual Japan have just solicited Memories, Spriggan and Metropolis for dual DVD/Blu-ray releases.
Blu-ray will be done on 50GB dual layered discs with AVC encoding (finally) so this will be QUALITY!!. The DVDs will be region encoded 1 and 2. Not exactly sure if these are the first releases of this kind, but either way, this is a massive step is the right direction (albeit they cost £50 a pop). The only thing I'm not sure on is the region code for the Blu-ray... I'm guessing it's A only, which means here in Europe we can't play it (we're region B (yeah put out of anything good as usual, but that's Sony for you)).

On a side note I went around to look at Hi Def TV's and everything that I was shown on it that wasn't made for Hi Def looked awful.

Nearly all Blu-Ray discs have been released as region ABC (region free) so this could well be the same.

Either that or some company will start making region free Blu-Ray players :p

Goodness me, that news has made me so happy! That really is music to my ears :D

I noticed that as well, went into a Sony store in London, packed with massive HDTVs, all showing crappy quality stuff. No idea why it looks worse on an HDTV than on an SDTV of the same size, or maybe it's just because if you know it's an HDTV you look for the quality of the image.

Its all the do with the resolution of the picture, a SD picture is no where near as big as a HD picture, Hence a SD image is stretched.

I would explain it better. But I have anime to watch. . .:D[/img]

Panavision Genesis, please. :)

Bandai Vis. is NOT the way to go about this, somewhere between the £80 a disk releases (Do not think for one moment that they'd let it go for nothing less than twice the us price), the lack of a dub and thier general inablity to understand "what anime fan want" (sic)

I would say that if that's the face of globalisation of anime releases than thank **** we're behind the iron curtian of IP Adresses and such.

As much as it goes against everyone elses opinions about BV, I actually think they're doing a good job. I don't mind paying that money for an anime, I mean.. everyone in Japan has to pay that kind of money for it, and the thing is that it goes back to the creators of the anime anyway, so just think of it as paying them extra : D.
But actually, I do like paying the price for anime that is currently set, so maybe BV will have to think about lowering the price a bit in Japan.
I mean, paying $50 for something like the quality of Eureka 7 and Haruhi.. the packaging I mean, that's worth it. If they were just plain dvd cases then fair enough, but Haruhi especially had a really amazing release so the high price point is fair enough... Although Funimation do put out some smexy releases, for a much lower price, so I don't know.
In fact I kind of contradict myself here, high prices bad, low prices good. Bad Bandai.

The idea of £50 for so litte should not sit well with anyone.

And the whole idea with the LE Haruhi release is the fact that you could get a Standard Edition without the high pricepoint.

Either way, with all of Bandai's releases, we're not paying for crap, they do a good job with every release so I think it's worth the money.. I just found another release coming from Japan, it's £50 for Wings of Honneamise DVD + BD combo pack, and it comes with a chipboard outer... quality speaks for itself. I see what you mean that there should be a standard edition for people who want to pay less for it though. That's what we have the privilege of and Japan don't, it seems. Not that I know much about the Japanese anime release market.

The anime DVD market in Japan is largely rental to my knowledge, with mostly collectors buying DVDs.

Ah, I don't know what to make of that really, I guess that means less people actually buy the DVDs, but the price of the DVDs makes up for that. It seems to be a totally different ball game over in the rest of the world though, more people own DVDs than rent as far as I know.
Hmm

In addition to DVD's being expensive over there they have anime on TV constantly so there's even less desire to buy DVD's. I know I wouldn't if it were that situation over here.

I think you're kind of wrong about the anime always on TV actually.
I've heard from many people, Chris I think mentioned it sometime, that anime is on in the early hours of the morning usually. It's only ones like Naruto and Bleach that are on in the day I should think.

Well I meant in regular shedules on TV not so much a constant broadcast.

I thought that some channels like Animax did show anime as pretty much constant broadcast.

Either way, they would be at awkward times to watch on a regular basis.

Ever heard of a VCR timer? That's what I do(well used to do, I have a hard drive recorder box thing now). :p

That'd be non-stop recording then, to see the volume of anime that would be shown. It's hard enough to keep up with fansubs. You'd have to spend your whole day watching anime from the previous night .
