The Daily Mail discuss manga

Following up last week's good news that The Reading Society is planning on recommending 150 manga graphic novels to various schools and libraries scattered across the UK- sensationalist tabloid The Daily Mail (a newspaper which has apparently slated anime in the past too) has hit out at this decision and is seemingly against such a move.

In an article dramatically titled "Child murder, incest and rape...is this really how our schools should be encouraging boys to read?", they provide exactly the kind of damaging bias you would expect from a journalist who knows next to nothing about the manga art form. Funnily enough, this article does actually end on something of a positive note, but if just for the horrendous headline- The Daily Mail deserves the worldwide scorn of a million anime fans. Click here to read the 'article' (I use this term loosely, more like ignorant rant) for yourself (thanks go to Richy for taking the time to scan it in for us!).

I'd hardly say they "discuss" manga - that implies there's more than sensationalism and bias in the article. they put a bit of positivity at the end, but they way it's done it makes the Reading Agency sound really defensive about it.

Did anyone get this week's Mail on Sunday? I'm just curious to see if anyone complained. I tried to get a copy but they were sold out because of the CD-thingy...

This IS the Daily Mail we're talking about here. They aren't the most liberal and open minded of media outlets.

No plus they have the nickname the Daily Bigot - the in laws get it and everytime I decide to pick it up and have a scan of the articles (usually as a something to fill in the time while the in-laws make tea or food) I get a urge just to go throttle one of their journelist because their views are so full of narrow minded rubbish.

This piece of news has just been unexpectably sourced by the chaps over at Anime News Network. Richy, your paper and desk are being beamed across the world ;)

Seriously, good to see the likes of ANN taking notice of our strife in the UK. I hope the Daily Mail have received more than a few complaints about their casually destructive rant.

Haha! I did try to scan it, but me scanner doesn't work with Windows XP.

Anyho, glad to see this atrocity has been brought to a more vast audience

I'm repeating myself here, but I hate The Daily Mail. Hate them.

I can't believe that paper has been around for as long as it has. Its an evil paper. Straight out of Satan's anal passage if I may be so crude (sorry if I've offended anyone).

Here's a question for you. What's worse? The Daily Mail paper or the fools who read them?

Decisions decisions.

:)
