Texhnolyze

Well I watched the 1st Volume of Texhnolyze and I can honestly say I have never been so undecided about an anime before. Usually I can decide whether I want to buy the boxset after the 1st vol but I don't know what I thought of it. I certainly didn't think it was bad, it was certainly getting interesting, especially at the back end of the 4th ep. There just didn't seem to be enough in the 1st volume to help me decide whether it's worth purchasing the series.

There'll obviously be more revealed in the next volume but would rather get the boxset tbh but only if its worth it :D

So my questions are has anyone seen it? If so what did you think?

Here's what I wrote about it a few years ago...

"it is a richly layered complex tale, told languorously with emphasis on character. It's also told in a disjointed, confusing style that hints and alludes, rather than resorting to something so crude as exposition. "

and

"Texhnolyze is bleak and gritty stuff. It's also utterly compelling and visually atmospheric. If you have any preconceived notions about anime, put them to one side, as this series is unlike anything else. Texhnolyze possesses a complex adult story, intelligent ideas, and multi-faceted characters. True, it won't be to all tastes. If you are looking for optimism and hope in a story, then look elsewhere, and nothing is laid out on a platter for the audience here. This is truly one of those instances where the more you put in, the more you get out. But if you are willing to put in the effort, then I have no hesitation in recommending Texhnolyze, one of the more atypical animes of the year, and also one of the most impressive."

I watched the first volume a while back and it got so good towards the end. I'll hopefully get the rest when it lowers in price, should be a good watch.

When do series' prices lower over here? I've always assumed gradual price reduction wasn't common amongst R2 anime titles.

I recently bought the newish boxset that came out a month or so ago. I'm looking forward to it so much so that I've put it to the back of my 'to watch' list (which is a good thing in my world since I leave the best till last). On paper this is looking like a great anime series. I hope it lives up to the expectation.

I reviewed the boxset just the other day on News-Anime.com. I thought it was amazing frankly, an understated, intelligent and thoughtful piece of work in the line of Lain, only much stronger in sense.

I'm waiting for ABe to make a show where there's an entire episode with no dialogue.

Well, I'm off work next week so I'm looking forward to watching it over the holidays.

I enjoyed Lain & Boogiepop a lot so I'm guessing this will be just as good if not better. Plus it's a longer series compared to those two.

Texhnolyze has been sat on my shelves for at least six months unwatched. It's the oldest item in my backlog. I really do want to watch it but I just haven't been in the right frame of mind. Maybe this talk will re-kindle my interest.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. It is one of those animes where you have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it and you don't have to be limited with time. It's gonna be a perfect holiday anime.

I know what you mean. I bought the first two R1 volumes when they were released in 2003 or whatever. It was good but at the time I didn't feel compelled to buy the rest. Last June I picked up the remaining volumes from Right Stuf and they remain on my shelf, still sealed. One day I'll watch them.

This show kicks ass in my opinion. Gritty and compelling. Great intro music too. This show is a lot darker than the usual anime I watch, but the plot twists are fab.

Remains to be underated forever...

I've just finished the first few episodes. Very dark and slow, two elements I like in an anime. It gives me an old-school nostalgic feel like some of the 90's classics. Not much of the story has been revealed but I'm enjoying it so far. I'm wishing I could stay up a bit later and carry on watching. Damn. Ah well, I have the rest of the week anyway.

This is a very refreshing series. I enjoyed it a lot, I want to find time to watch it for a second time because it's just one of those animes that warrants a second viewing so soon after the first. For a start, I've seen many theories about the story, involving Kano and the question of the existance of Lux itself.

I had a similar fate with Serial Experiments Lain, on first viewing, I just didn't apply myself enough, whereas, on second, I fully understand what was going on and where it was ending up. However, on first viewing, I prefer and understand Texhnolyze and what it's trying to say a lot more than I did Lain.

Very dark & just a story of no hope, even when they do get to the surface world.

I've seen the first episode, love the bleak atmosphere it establishes. The whole thing of showing without telling is strangely compelling too. When I'm not broke I'll have to nab the boxset.

Started watching Shigurui: Death Frenzy, and a couple of episodes in, the pacing, the look, the feel and the oppressive tone of it put me in a familiar frame of mind.

Sure enough, Shigurui and Texhnolyze share a director.

As for content, Shigurui is a grower, and I don't think I'll know until the final episode if it is a worthwhile watch or not. It does qualify for the nasty and pretty oxymoron of the year award though.

Wildcard: Put it to the top of your list. Well worth it, it's an anime you can keep watching & you'll get something new out of it each time. One of those great animes that delve deep into the human mind and also society as a whole.

I watched this series again over the weekend, I like it more and more. The first 10/10 in a while as I really appreciated it a lot more the second time around and I have a much better understanding of it overall now. It pretty much has everything you could want in an anime for me anyway. A very thoughtful series, it gives you much to think about.

The ending with the final song is about as good as it gets with an anime series, on a par with Cowboy Bebop & Gungrave.

Will do, going on that first episode I have a hunch it would be my sort of thing and your recommendation appears to confirm this. I'll keep an eye out for deals on it.
