Its genius! Game was going down in price anyway and they are making big bucks from there in game store, so why not making it free and keep the store purchases flowing :p

So what does this restrict? I'm not au fait with TF2 stuff. If it's just hats and **** then I'm fine with not getting access :p
That's pretty much it by the looks of things, my little bro buys those crappy items, even though I keep telling him they're just conning

I don't give a **** about what Valvew are doing, I just wish they'd stop it with this nonsense and actually release Half Life 2: EP3

1. How is it a con? They have an in-game economy, the game was pretty damned cheap already, this has removed the stumbling block of handing over cash for one of the best multiplayer games on the PC which just happens to be the best supported on the PC too.

Also, the in-game items aren't really a con, you have the choice to either buy them or wait until you get them in a random drop/can craft them. The purchase option is there for impatient types.

Unlike, say, Activision, who have you fork out for map packs for Call of Duty that can't even be carried over to the next full price game.

2. The Half-Life games are handled by a different set of developers, Valve are huge now, they'll be working on more than one game at a time, hence how we've had HL2:Ep2, Portal, TF2, Left4Dead, Left4Dead 2 and Portal 2 on the Orange Box and since.

Their items are a con for more impressionable people, I perosnally feel that because of the hats and whatnot the game has been detracted from fragging everyone in site to a competition to see who can get the most hats first

If it makes them money then fine, they're a business at the end of the day, and Valve are one of the only companies that still consider PC gaming to be worthwhile, guys like Activision can and should learn from them

The hats are there to add a bit of personalisation to what would otherwise be a very impersonal game. I don't really bother with them, if one drops, cool, if not, I don't really care, although I do like my Spiral Knights helmet. It's just a meta thing to keep people playing really as theres so much competition now. It doesn't really take away from fragging at all as thats not really the aim of the game anyway.

Keep in mind, you can get most of the hats and extras without actually buying them, you just unlock them as you play. So there is never any loss of content for anyone, it just takes a bit longer than going and purchasing them, simple as that.

Saw this with the Meet the medic trailer they showed off yesterday too, was worth the watch.(dunno if it is in the link above, but you can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36lSzUMB ... ture=feedf) Tis a good move by valve, and one i kinda saw coming for a while, i have to say.

Gameplay is exactly the same, just some features are removed or just lowered (Such as backpack space).

I agree though that the shop itself is very expensive for what it is (novelty items) but it helps fund projects with its HUGE income... :p

But yes... Gieb HL2 Ep3!
