Tales of Earthsea DVD coming soon to the UK

Great! That makes the current exclusivity score:
UK 5, USA 59,032.

Looking forward to judging the movie behind the studio and author politics.

This is some really interesting news, again it's a shame they aren't getting a dub worked for it (same dealie as Only Yesterday I s'pose) but will be one to look out for none the less.

I wouldn't trust everything that Play.com list (they're even had Gifpia and Nintendo Puzzle Collection up for pre-order) but I suppose that's the side of effect of trying to get everything online before anyone else. And in terms of the DVD itself, I can understand the logic behind this release - they could make a fortune in export sales if it's Region 0 and NTSC, and then have a cinema release and dual-langage DVD for all the non-otaku when they get the dub in 2010.

It will be PAL and region 2 without a doubt.

It is nice to see this coming here. Despite all the speculation that the US couldn't have it for the next 3/4 years it was never absolutely given that it would appear here before then so it is good to see. Of course there is still plenty of time for this to be retracted. Only Yesterday was very tentative up until a couple of months before its release and was largely dependant upon Madman releasing it in Australia. I don't forsee the same kind of problem with this since it is somewhat larger and more well known than Only Yesterday but a concrete date will be a good sign in the future.

Just got a reply in an e-mail from Optimum Releasing confirming this.

We will be releasing this title in the summer of 2007. No fixed date yet I’m afraid. It’ll probably be subtitles rather than dubbed, but we’ll have more information on this nearer to the release date.

If I remember rightly "Only Yesterday" will be dubbed by Disney at some point after they got more of Ghiblis more childrens titles done first. Gedo Senki is new, and therfore outside of that deal. So unless the Universal licensing debarcle also includes outside of the US, and there is nothing in the public domain that states it does, there would be no other reason, apart from economics, that it couldn't be dubbed here instead.

Disney has dubbed every ghibli film except Grave of the Fireflies (not in their deal, someone else publishes it), Only Yesterday and the lesser known titles that no one outside of Japan has shown any movement towards releasing (Ocean Waves, Various short films). If demand for Only Yesterday proves popular enough, they may be convinced to release it, or at least sublicense it. Whether they go to the trouble of dubbing it is another matter.

The dubbing of Gedo Senki by a non-Disney company isn't entirely improbable, but will most likely fall to Australia's Madman company, and probably depends most of all on their plans for a theatrical release of the movie.

Actually, Disney have said several times that they have no intention of dubbing or releasing Only Yesterday in the USA. A search on Nausicaa.net should bring up a link for that info.

Actually, Nausicaa.net claims the Disney does include outside of the US and I'd trust them on the issue. Not that Optimum are ever going to dub it anyway, they are film distributors after all. They don't have any experience in the area. They'll probably only do it if Madman demand it and are willing to help pay for it.

Still, I'm glad we're going to see it so soon. I was worried we'd have to wait until 2009 or whenever the US are going to get it. The lack of dub is small sacrifice compared to having to wait years on end. Besides, I'm sure Optimum will re-release it once the dub has been completed.

I would think that by 2009, both the US version and any UK release with a Disney-dub will be released on whichever HD format they choose to roll with (Optimum's first titles shall be HD DVD)...

Given Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence was Manga UK's best seller this year, a movie as popular as Gedo Senki - if just through importing - would surely make enough money back to cover the cost of producing an English dub.

That said I suspect Optimum \ Madman may well hold back to avoid souring relations with Disney - not to mention Disney can attract a star studded Hollywood cast of actors to perform the voice work.

I hope there's a limited Cinema showing, Optimum have been giving every recent Ghibli film one, HMC less limited than others. You really need to see these films on the big screen to really appreciate them.

It is fairly unlikely although there is of course always a chance for an arthouse cinema showing but given no English dub anything more is extremely doubtful.

You've been keeping count? and holyshit @ the exclusives we've had.

Eh, I've had mixed reviews of this movie, I personally can wait for it. Though I like how "Soon" is a substitute for "We don't know when it's to be dubbed."

I'm all but certain that we'll see a limited release. Ghibli has really taken off in the UK, there's no question about it, and it will have people interested by association. Even the Cat Returns had a limited arthouse release, and the Earthsea series, like Howl's Moving Castle, adds a little more western brand recognition into the mix.

The dubbing is not the reason for why it is labelled as soon since the dubbing will not be happening anytime soon at all. Optimum are not above releasing it with Japanese dub and English subs only. A lot of their catalogue is like that and only the (majority of) the Ghibli Collection actually have an optional English dub.

The available soon is there because they have not finalised their release schedule for 2007 and are not completely fixed on when it will become available. They are potentially waiting for Madman to create PAL masters for the title as they did for Only Yesterday, which means they can cut costs by cutting out the need to create such masters themselves.

I'm sure Disney will release Earthsea on Bluray in 2009, but they'll release it on DVD too. Same with Optimum and HD-DVD. Both HD formats are doomed to failure. Only people who own HD-TVs care about either HD format and only a small minority of people own HD TVs. That won't have changed in three years time.

Optimum are only releasing HD-DVD titles because they were recently brought by Canal+, who are strong backer of the format.

Then again they might just do it to stick one into Universal's eye from behind. Afterall there is no love lost between those two.
