Can confirm it fine too. I read volumes 1, 2, 4 and then left the books until volume 9 (as I'm not personally a fan of the GGO arc), but I've seen all the anime so it all worked. 
Also I'd recommend checking out the Sword Art Online: Progressive novels which are a retelling of the first arc from the first floor up - it's really good if you like the series.
