According a <a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/press.php">press release</a> we received last week, UK anime DVD publishers Optimum Releasing have been bought by giant french film label StudioCanal. Optimum (via their Optimum Asia label) are currently releasing the whole Studio Ghibli catalogue in the UK as well as having previously published Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust on DVD.<ul class="menu">"2006 Optimum Releasing, one of the UK’s leading independent film distributors has agreed a deal for StudioCanal to acquire Optimum Releasing including its theatrical and home entertainment distribution operations. StudioCanal is the film, production and sales distribution arm of French media group, Canal+."
"The deal will help Optimum grow by combining its resources with those of StudioCanal. This will give Optimum access to one of the largest film catalogues in the world and to StudioCanal’s line-up of new films. It will also allow for larger rights acquisitions and enable the company to strengthen its existing talent relationships."</ul><a href="http://www.animeuknews.net/press.php">Read the full press release here</a>.

Fingers crossed then that this deal will mean more anime acquisitions for Optimum. I'd love to see them continue to branch out and release more anime like Bloodlust.

Well hopefully this will make there dvds better, on their dvd for "All About Lily Chou Chou" you can hardly see the subtitles the majority of the time and on "A Touch of Zen" barely any of the film is even subtitled.

I've been impressed with how Optimum have treated their anime releases, Ghibli stuff in particular. I'm hoping this merger will give them more corporate clout in acquiring licences - just look at the quality stuff Beez have released which must be due, in part at least, to their Bandai heritage.

I can see their live action releases benefiting too.
