Still no word from ADV on Gurren Lagann; also license Kiba

ADV <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-03-22/adv-picks-up-upper-deck-japan-kiba">have picked up</a> the shonen action/fantasy with a card-game tie-in, <em><strong>Kiba</strong></em>, for release in North America. The series is 51 episodes long and aired in Japan during 2006. In other news, it seems the company, despite confirming their licenses many months ago, are no closer to even annoucing release plans for <em>Gainax</em>'s latest epic mecha anime <em><strong>Gurren Lagann</strong></em> or otaku comedy <em><strong>Sergeant Frog</strong></em>.

I'm not going to buy anything else from you ADV until you release Gurren Lagann, I hope you realize this, because your M-Lock cases are murder when trying to actually get a disc out of the case. >_>

Uh, I tried to watch Kiba but I really couldn't stand it. Which begs the question, what exactly are ADV playing at? Can they simply not afford to acquire/release Gurren Lagann? If so, how come they can afford to release a 50 episode not so popular, shonen card game series? It astounds me :(

Depends if they are either getting cut of the card game's profits, if it becomes like Magic or Pokemon cards ADV will be rolling in cash.

ADV's method of attack seems to be "Find out what's the most popular thing right now, get the rights to it (Thus, playing into the whole "Fansubers will stop" ideology) and then proced to blue ball the hell out of those people who are honest enough to wait for it whilst they shovel out a bunch of anime shovelware that could do better staying in ol' Nipon.

And, as we can clearly see from the last couple of months, it's been doing great for them.

I wish I could say different, but Kiba is a horrendous series. I'm baffled ADV are picking it up, though something tells me it's potentially more profitable than the standard anime due to its various franchise tie-ins. A shame, really, Kiba gets licensed and we still no nothing of Gurren Lagann. Such a massive waste of time.

Yeah, not that I can judge the series having not seen it. I think it's pretty safe to say ADV are trying to get a mainstream title out there - i.e a shounen title - to raise their profile/money.

Just reading the facts and figures for how well Inu Yasha did (I know that's well know anyway, but just gauging how popular shounen series are), you can't blame ADV. Who knows how well it'll do though.

.Episodic anime on DVD and graphic novels are proven performers – over 2.3 million DVDs and 2.5 million graphic novels sold in the U.S. since launch
.Inuyasha the Movie Vols. 1, 2, 3, & 4 have sold through 475k units to date (Nielsen VideoScan 03/02/08 )
.Over 287K Sold-In on Season Box Sets 1 – 4!!

(No credit to me - I have no idea where the guy on AoD found the figures)

But here's the joke, I would buy the singles of GL in an instant.

For once, its the anime company that's holding out on the other side.
As far as I am aware it is not ADV that is holding out, either...
