Steamboy: Director's Cut

This may not be an altogether original choice but what did peeps think of this film?

I enjoyed it more than I expected, but I still haven't decided how much I like it.

Odd really. :)

It was a lot more action heavy than I expected but I thought it was a fairly well rounded film.

The animation was great but I didn't think it was quite as good as expected (not the animation, more the art direction).

Still, I'm being piccy. :lol:
 
I had to watch this as a rental from Blockbusters and unfortunately that meant dubbed only, the accents really drove me up the wall, am waiting for my mate to buy the full version so I can watch it with subtitles, hopefully it was improve it for me
 
it's werid, i couldnt listen to the jap audio becasue it felt so british. The settings were authentic along with the accents of the english dub. apart from Ray's character, i thought the dub was really good.
 
I was actually rather disapointed with Steamboy. Considering all the talk of 'most expensive anime ever' it was not all that good. Its rare I find a film overlong (99 times out of 100 I find films too short) but this one did meander about a bit at times in the conclusion. Its also weird, normally i adore steampunk, but perhaps grounding steampunk so heavilly in a real time period like this jarred just a bit too much for me.

Still time is the healer of all wounds and i will watch it again (3rd time) and hope it improves.
 
The english dub was an oddity in my opinion.

On the one hand I detested Anna Paquin's voice for the lead character Ray, I found it grated more than a sweeping brush on concrete (don't you just HATE that?!).

But on the other I liked Alfred Molina's and Patrick Stewarts turns.

Though I got the Director's Cut edition I confess I haven't watched the Japanese track but I've only watched it once so that'll be next time.

I just realised I have the complete opposite opinion about Ray's english dub voice over lol.

Think that particular voice is like Marmite, you either like it or you don't. :)

I always thought they should have got Jane Leeves (the housekeeper from Cheers spinoff, Frasier) to do Ray's voice. She's British, does a good Manchester accent and would have suited the character to the ground.
 
I thought the film was excellent - it captures the image of Victorin England so well. It is a bit overlong though, so in reterospect I might have done better to buy the regular rather than Director's Cut edition.

I really hope Otomo's next film won't keep us waiting as long as this one did! :)
 
i haven't seen it and from the looks of it would rather gauge my eyes out before seein...

i have to admit i love trash anime
