Today, the Japanese&nbsp;<em>Sports Nippon</em>&nbsp;newspaper has announced that the hit anime series&nbsp;<em>Space Battleship Yamato</em>&nbsp;(known overseas as&nbsp;<em>Star Blazers</em>) is set to receive a Hollywood movie, which will be produced by Skydance Productions (<em>Mission:&nbsp;Impossible - Ghost Protocol</em>, <em>World War Z</em>). Christopher McQuarrie (<em>Jack Reacher</em>,&nbsp;<em>Mission: Impossible 5</em>) is currently slated to direct the feature, with Shoji Nishizaki, the adopted son of&nbsp;<em>Space Battleship Yamato</em>&nbsp;producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki listed as an executive producer.

The movie is expected to enter production after the completion of&nbsp;<em>Mission: Impossible 5</em>&nbsp;and is expected to be released in 2017.

A Japanese live-action adaptation of&nbsp;<em>Space Battleship Yamato</em>&nbsp;was released in Japan in 2010 and then released in the United Kingdom by Manga Entertainment UK on DVD and blu-ray last summer.

So...is adapting manga/light novels/anime the latest Hollywood trend now that the U.S. comic book movie bubble is about to burst?

Well I feel quite confident on this feature. I hear the director did a good job on Jack Reacher and having Nishizaki involved could help keep the film from being a mess.

It's a good point - I do wonder if this recent spate of rumours (if true) is prompted more by Hollywood getting scared they're running out of US source material, or more that they've ben encouraged by the relative successes of Edge of Tomorrow/Pacific Rim and are just thinking 'hey, let's knock a couple more like that, maybe one will get lucky and hit it big'.

Although I disliked Pacific Rim due to its glaring plot holes, I found it to be more interesting than an adaptation because it was an original work inspired by the mech and kaiju genres. Maybe there's room for more things like that? For example, an original Magical Girl TV show aimed at school girls?

I think I'd like to see more of that to be honest.

I'm surprised someone in Hollywood hasn't ripped off Madoka yet to be honest, considering the current for 'strong female/dark plot' teen flicks like Hunger Games or Divergent.

I can sort of imagine some weird Tim Burton esque gothic loli magical girl thing - though they'd probably ruin it by trying to make it too quirky in an American 'ohhh, so alternative/indie' sense. Zooey Deschanel would be the main character and the mascot animal would be like the animatronic cat in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
