According to reports on Anime on DVD, Production I.G. are planning to "re-cut" Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for a 140-minute movie re-telling of "the Laughing Man" story arc from the series. Although a lot of footage from the series is expected to be used, new (and "theatrical" quality) animation is also being promised as well as re-recorded dialogue.

This movie will be released on Japanese DVD on the 23rd of September. As yet, no Western releases have been revealed.

This one should be interesting, Production I.G. don't seem like a company who puts out typical "cash-in" releases so I'm quite hopeful that they've taken their time with this and produced a fantastic movie!

Hmm... you sought of got my hopes up there one I read 'Stand Alone Complex Movie'. I can't say I'd expect much.

Yeah when I saw Stand Alone Complex Movie I was hyped, bit unsure how they could mix the complex with the stand alone nature of episodes.

Still no reason to think this wont be good. Macross PLus Movie was a good cut of the Macross PLus OVA. Seeing as this movie is only focussing on the Laughing Man case all the extraneous stuff can be shed.

So this will be the same kind of thing as the RahXephon movie- almost the same story and footage, but not quite? Maybe one to rent rather than buy, but still worth a look.

Most likley yeah. I like compilation movies anyway, its much easier to watch them then to rewatch the whole show

True, but the quality of the storyline typically suffers as a result. Personally, I would much rather watch through the individual episodes. If they were making a seperate story and giving it all new animation (like Cowboy Bebop for example) I could see that being much better.

Personally, I felt the RahXephon movie felt very disjointed, and I don't see how they can try this without it feeling the same as well.

I think this is interesting because it's not as though the Laughing Man arc has been dominant through out Stand Alone Complex so far. There has been roughly 3 or 4 episodes (not including the chat-room discussion episode) devoted to it so far and I can't see the series spending a lot more time on it either... perhaps another 3 or 4 episodes? 8 episodes x 22 minutes is 176 minutes overall, it won't be as hard to squish this down into a 140 minute movie as say the 26 episodes of RahXephon (and I agree Subedii, the RahXephon movie was disjointed).

Me too, my heart skipted a beat when I saw the news. But I just don't seem the point if its reusing footage. Seems to be just for the money!
