According to various reports appearing on UK anime websites, Tartan (who are famous amongst UK Asian film fans for their 'Asia Extreme' label) have picked up the UK distribution rights for the acclaimed animated science-fiction movie Sky Blue (aka Wonderful Days).

This Korean animated movie (which is heavily influenced by anime) is currently in the running for a 2005 'Best animated feature' Oscar nomination along with Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. The UK release date has been set for the 24th of June. Watch the trailer.

I've seen Sky Blue dubbed 'Korean anime' before but that's a contradiction- something can't be both Korean AND Japanese animation. From what I gather, Wonderful Days was animated and authored by Koreans (despite looking a lot like anime) and thus is not anime.

Ironically, GAINAX are planning to turn the film into something resembling anime!

Yahoo Japan reports that Gainax has announced that it will produce a Japanese language version of Wonderful Days. Yamaga Hiroshi, the director of the Japanese version, stated that they didn't merely dub it but also changed the direction so that the film's dialogue would feel less alien to Japanese viewers.

So they're doing something that would make the hardcore elite bay for blood if something like that was tried over in the West? And how the hell can they make it feel less alien? Korean animation derives from anime, surely?
