should there be a balance of what we watch

ok first off

everytime i watch a anime that has a tragedy character or is a tragic anime or sad anime or a character you sympathise with because of there tragic past or sad circumstances or something like that, i end up a lil sad but after watching another anime with the same conditions sad, tragedy, ect right after finishing the last one i feel more sad and start getting depressed.

however after watching saber riding and the star sheriffs and watching squid girl * i love this series * all my saddness and depression disappears.

to be honest while watching saber riding and the star sheriffs, it made me want to stop watching it and watch anything other then saber riding.

but squid girl is a recent anime iv watched and now is a favourite and a cheer up anime for me.

anyways do you think there should be a balance like -

watch a tragic, violent, sad and then watch a comedy or a anime that cheers you up right after watching the tragic, sad ect anime

In general I think it's a good idea to watch a reasonable balance of shows.

I can definately see an argument for deliberately watching something more light hearted after something that's particularly heavy.

yeah exactly like for e.g.-

i watched str.a.in a couple of weeks ago and i was choked up with this series and just thinking about it makes me upset.

but after watching squid girl, or raman fighter miki or negima, trigun ect anything that puts a smile on my face eases the saddness.

or at least something kick ass like gurren largann, or a favourite anime

I would normally say watch balanced but my collection shows little variance so balance is thrown out of the window :p Though if you're talking about watching a depressing show then an uplifting show, I have set conditions.

If the depressing show was evangelion, then the uplifting show would be GaoGaiGar, since they're polar opposites in terms of themes and what not (though to be clear, I would watch GaoGaiGar over Eva any day of the week, month, year, century, millennia). If's an other combination of depressing show/ show that makes me happy, then the latter is more often then not either Fumoffu! or Pani Poni Dash. Either of those two always puts a smile on my face.

I suppose a balance is good, mood at the current moment in time does play a lot for me on what I watch, I can usually watch anything at anytime unless it does seem quite heavy in it's themes, which is the reason probably I have never gotten around to watching my Ergo Proxy DVD set or checking out something like Berserk.

those two series are actually enjoyable ergo proxy isn't depressing or sad, and berserk is a really really good show give them a watch.

The other day, I went straight from rewatching a few episodes of K-ON!! to rewatching the final episode of Madoka Magica. Yup. Just about sums it up.

I was actually talking to a friend of mine last night, because she was getting really down due to loads of things happening in "Supernatural", so I was sending her comedy clips to try and cheer her up. Frankly, my anime collection has so many different genres (slice of life, comedy, shonen, romance, drama) that finding a balance isn't hard at all.

Also with my manga collection, let's just say that alphabetically, "Pokémon" is directly followed by "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" and "Fullmetal Alchemist" is followed by "Is This A Zombie?".

I usually watch two series at the same time and try to avoid two similar anime. I won't watch two shounen or two samurai series at the same time, I mix them up to avoid getting bored of watching the same thing constantly. For example, I'm watching Spice & Wolf and SpeedGrapher currently. I'm also holding Squid Girl back until I start watching Clannad After Story.

I watch whatever takes my fancy at the time (currently watching Strike Witches Season 1 and Ghost Sweeper Mikami for instance).

The only rule I have is watching scratched discs as early as possible so if I nead to report a faulty disc I still have time to do so.

@Joshawott -_- supernatural really................ well saying that if i watched supernatural il have to find and order more comedy anime to cheer me up

@mangaman74 good idea

@elixEideJ i didn't like speed grapher at all. that was a depressing series

Should there be a balance in the tone of things people watch? I don't think it's for me to say what anyone else should or shouldn't do, they can do whatever they like.

Is there a balance in the tone of the things I watch? Probably, though it's in no way intentional. I wouldn't put on something light hearted or happy to lift my mood like others have suggested because it simply wouldn't work, nor would I enjoy it at the time. Watching upbeat things when I'm feeling down is likely to have the opposite of the intended effect, in that I'll probably find it trivial if not saccharine and just want to turn it off. Not to say I can't appreciate those shows when I'm in the right frame of mind, but I have to feel happy already in order to want to watch happy things. Depressing stuff I can watch any time and not be particularly affected by it.

tl;dr - I guess fiction doesn't have that great an effect on my mood.

Pretty much agree with ayase, if I'm in the mood for something of a certain slant, I'm probably in the mood for more of it, rather than the content itself dictating my mood and hence what I'm looking for afterwards.

I tend to have more of a balance in the length or format of what I'm watching or reading, if anything.

Well to be honest I like Variety too be every time I watch something that depresses me I tend to watch something thatll cheer me up.

There was this one time where I watched 4-5 series that made me depressed so bad I was depressed for 2 weeks til I watched a few anime series that made me laugh then I got better

Iv been thought the next 14 series and put them in order of which series that I might find depressing and which ones i might find cheery or spooky * I find spooky anime series fun to watch like ghost hunt or ghost hound* first on my list is blassreiter I can tell this is going to be a violent one but after that I'm watching shiki
