It’s a moment that a lot of us had been anticipating but the UK & Ireland had been left in the dark for so long. But now it’s happening – the king of monsters has returned to the UK!
Manga Animatsu are pleased to announce they have managed to acquire the theatrical and home video license to the latest Godzilla film in the franchise from TOHO; Shin Gojira, known for the English zones as Shin Godzilla (while in the Asian market it was called Godzilla Resurgence).
This is the first Godzilla movie since Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004 from the Japanese distributor and also the 29th official Japanese film in the franchise. What makes this movie catch the eye of the community were the directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi helming the film. Hideaki Anno directed Neon Genesis Evangelion while Shinji Higuchi directed the live-action Attack on Titan films.
The UK license was originally acquired by Altitude Films (who also have Mary and the Witch’s Flower from director Hiromasa Yonebayashi) but news stated they dropped the title sometime in March of this year. Now that Manga have acquired the license we can finally witness Godzilla once again.
Manga will be providing a limited theatrical run throughout the United Kingdom on Thursday 10th August 2017 in Japanese audio with English subtitles. So far their official Shin Godzilla website mentioned select areas for the time being, but Showcase Cinema’s official website does list more territories so do look around if you want to see if it’s coming to your area. Story synopsis:
When a massive, gilled monster emerges from the deep and tears through the city, the government scrambles to save its citizens. A rag-tag team of volunteers cuts through a web of red tape to uncover the monster’s weakness and its mysterious ties to a foreign superpower. But time is not on their side—the greatest catastrophe to ever befall the world is about to evolve right before their very eyes.
Do not worry if you can’t find a screen near you as the home video release has been mentioned by Manga’s Andrew Hewson on social media to be sometime later this year. Funimation have also produced an English dub for this film but it’s currently unknown whether the UK home video release will include it.
If you want more Godzilla news, there’s also a CG anime movie trilogy coming to Netflix from studio Polygon Pictures, entitled Godzilla: Monster Planet. The first trailer was recently released.
