Sex Ed 120% Volume 2 Review

why have Yen Press given it a Mature ’18’ rating, when an Older Teen 15-16 rating would be more useful?
Is there any kind of external ratings organisation for comics these days, or industry-wide guidelines, or is it entirely self-governed by the publisher? I know the Comics Code isn't a thing anymore; just wondering if anything has replaced it in recent years.

That's a really good question, @Dai - and you're right, I think, in that US manga publishers set - and define - their own age ratings but they tend to tie in with what other US publishers are doing, so there's consistency on the whole. Kodansha explain their ratings in this PDF and VIZ Media explain theirs here .

In fairness to Yen Press, Volume 2 does drop the f word at least once in this volume which doesn't make it particularly attractive to parents for their young teens. I don't remember if volume 1 was similar for swearing, but that alone for me puts it in a very different demographic to a series like O Maidens in Your Savage Season for example.

The other thing is that Yen Press is selling to a variety of countries even outside of us and the US, so I can see why they want to carefully cover all bases given other places might be even harder on sexual content of any nature, even something fairly educational like this.

Anyways, in terms of content, I liked this volume but I felt some of the chapters felt a little forced in how they led into the topic of the day which is a shame since it did take me out of the book. But I did like the variety of topics on display, my favourite being the BL storyline where it dives into why you might find that appealing to read even if you yourself aren't attracted to men. Especially since you can easily reverse it to fit the GL genre as well. :)
