Forum regular Michelle Howarth (aka MangaMinx) has come through for us again with a series review of ADV's cult favourite psychological horror Boogiepop Phantom, out now in the UK. As always, guest reviews and contributions are welcome at Anime UK News and so if you feel you have some burgeoning writing talent just waiting to explode, send us a review and prove it.
Boogiepop Phantom is a show that people will love or hate. The fact is- perhaps it is just too dark for some. While I found the ending wonderfully uplifting, some people will find the depressive nature of the story before that a bit too much to sit through. The plot is perhaps too complex for its own good at times too, with some elements proving very confusing upon your first or even second viewing. However at its best Boogiepop Phantom is a very clever and dark psychological horror that has been combined with unique visuals, sound and story.

Great, great series. It is very confusing, but ive heard that the audio commentaries (by the translator plus other dub staff) help fill in the gaps, as do the on screen notes. (by on screen i mean in the menus)

Someone should pick up the rights to the novels.

This review has perked up my interest in Boogiepop. I love horror, it's always been one of my favourite genres and this "Manticore" monster sounds like something from a Greek myth (Greek myths are the best!).

Isn't the manticore a creature thats a mix of Human , Lion and Scorpion ? ( according to greek mythology anyway ) . Certainly where they got the name from I'm sure.

My experience with Horror tends not to be too positive. There isn't much that gets me interested, and I find a lot of the stuff overhyped.

Having said that, I've never really tried a horror anime before. I suppose it would be worth a shot if I could watch the first few episodes to see whether I can get into the series or not.
