It's getting near that time of year again - when the Scotland Loves Anime festival kicks off in you guessed it, Scotland, in October. Starting off in the Glasgow Film Theatre between 10-12th October, the festival will then move to Edinburgh's Filmhouse between 13-19th October.

Listings have emerged online for the Glasgow leg of the festival, which also confirms that Mizuho Nishikubo, the director of Giovanni's Island will be present at the Glasgow screening of the movie to take part in a Q&A session. The Edinburgh event though, will have BONES Inc President Masahiko Minami (who will also be doing a special Q&A at Edinburgh) and Jonathan Clements as guests.

Appleseed Alpha (Shinji Aramaki, 2014).

Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods (Masahiro Hosoda, 2013).

Wings of Honneamise (Hiroyuki Yamaga, 1987)

Studio Bones: Talk Show(Masahiko Minami) - Two episodes of Space Dandy and a 60 minute Q&A with Masahiko Minami

And one mystery film!

I'm not as sold as i want to be on the line-up for this year, as i said in the news thread. Bayonetta, Dragonball Z, Time of Eve and the Studio Bones talk all have my interest.

Which reminds me, you missed the Studio Bones discussion, Giovanni's Island and Honneamise for Edinburgh, i'll edit that in for you quickly~

Someone thank Minami san for Sword of the Stranger for me, and tell him to also thank Ando san for it when he goes back to Japan. Wow, can't believe it came out in 2007. It's still the best proper samurai anime movie ever made. We need more like it.

Also, I didn't know there was a new Appleseed movie, but am disappointed it's another CGI one. Is every future Appleseed production going to be doomed to this fate. I'm pretty big a fan of the 1988 OVA, and the two CGI Appleseed movies I've seen can't even hold a candle to it, in any respect, well aside from computer graphics I guess.

I'm kind of surprised with the line-up to be honest - there's an awful lot of franchises in there, as opposed to one-off films/stand alone IPs.

As Professor Irony says - basically you can only program what's out and not been done recently more than anything! Funnily enough we've been blasted for eschewing some of the bigger named films before so this year it's fun to see the reverse!

That said - I think in terms of originals and stand alone-IP's though we've got more than franchises this year:

Stand Alone (I.e. no knowledge needed before watching):

- Sword of the Stranger [Studio Focus: BONES]
- Space Dandy [Studio Focus: BONES]

- Ghost in the Shell [Science Fiction in Japan]
- Wings of Honneamise [Science Fiction in Japan]
- Time of Eve [Science Fiction in Japan]

- Giovanni's Island [In Competition]
- Bayonetta: Bloody Fate [In Competition]
- Appleseed Alpha [In Competition]*

Franchise films, or require advanced knowledge:

- Lupin vs Conan (you certainly get more from it if a fan of either franchise)
- K Missing Kings
- Dragon Ball Z - Battle of the Gods

###

Appleseed Alpha could be argued as either, but as it is stand alone and no knowledge of the characters is required I put it in the former category really. The honest truth of the matter is you can't have a line-up like last year everytime that grabs everyone's attention all at once and this year is one where elements will appeal to different groups.

I'd still stand by this year is not drastically different to the norm for us - but it is interesting to see what grabs people's eyes. Hopefully we'll be able to lure you in for some of the screenings at least anyway!

Scotland Loves Anime always makes me wish that I had the money to afford such trips, but alas, I have a press pass for EuroGamer at the end of September too. I think Professor Irony hit in on the head in that Japan really hasn't released any theatrical anime movies this year that really jump out at the western fans. However, this year's line-up still has some promising titles.

If I had the money to, I would definitely want to check out Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, Giovanni's Island and Lupin III vs Detective Conan (I loved the original TV special). Seeing Ghost in the Shell on the big screen would also have been special.

Also, if I was an anime company, I'd make a film called "Mystery Film" =3.

There's some risk I may be kicking around too. You never know. It's a bit far for me to travel but say hi if you do see me!

Andrew
