Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

I'm a big Welcome to the N.H.K. enthusiast. It's one of the few anime that really had an impact on me emotionally, as there were many points that I could relate to with some of the characters. So a few friends of mine suggested I check out a series called Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei, which I would also like apparently. I've read the story synopsis to get an idea of what it's about, but I'd like to hear what the AUKN members thought about this series before I add it to my wishlist. So, is it any good and is there anything I should know that I may not already?

Its a hard series to talk about really. A fantastic one at that though. I wouldn't say its similar really to "Welcome the NHK" in any way, except an odd character having the same attributes as say, Satou. Your best bet is to delve right into Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei without giving it much off a thought, as what I did. Its very much black comedy - things like Suicide, Violence and everything and anything really that never normally gets touched on. There isn't a on-going story for it, It usually picks a subject and them runs with that for half an episode then chooses another and does it again of the latter half. To finish off; I throughly enjoyed the series and I don't see why anyone shouldn't really watch it.

Jayme basicaly hit the nail on the head with that description. It references to things like suicide but in a funny way. If your going to be buying the dvd's maybe watch the first episode (or clips) that has been fansubbed or something. I know most people dont like fansubbing but its a good way to check if you like a series before you buy it.

i myself like Welcome to the NHK and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei alot, i think they are both brilliantly funny series.

So all i have to say is, take a gander, you may like it.

I always check out some clips before I buy. I found the core plot interesting, and I can picture some funny situations with the direction this show would go. Apparently there's also a second season, though I'm not sure if it's finished airing yet or not.

The first season aired last year, I don't think there are exact dates but the second season is going to probably be around the fall season. Apparently there was a OVA Special thing of sorts released on the first of this year. Not sure if thats good or not though.

I thought that Martin did some damn fine posts on the series on his blog, so you may want to check them out.

Personally, I thought it was fun in short bursts of, say, an episode at a time. The humour is black and dry, often verbal or social, very different from usual anime fare. On top of that, there are some great little snippets that work their way in - some of the writing on the blackboards ("Watch anime in a light room with a dark heart" was one I liked) and things such as yaranaika in the last episode made me laugh.
Its way of taking a theme and running with it for half an episode works fairly well, but it can mean that sometimes half of an episode can drag if it doesn't work for you.
The art may seem plain compared to other series, but I think it's quite stylish, and works well with the series as a whole. The music, too, is fairly unique for an anime series. I wasn't a big fan of it myself (I wouldn't listen to it by itself, I mean), but it certainly added flavour to the show.

Eh? Season two has started. Well thats good news I suppose. I was hoping for a bit off a longer break though, Those who can understand Japanese got that, We whom don't, Didn't.

I'll start watching this new season ASAP anyway, I'm hoping for lots of greatness. I don't really have that much to watch.

Heh, Just watched the first episode of the [zoku] second season and It was really great. The start explains the first season and then it begins, Its back to its roots. Good ol' "So Long Despair Teacher.. EXTREME". Fantastic series. I can't put my finger on it exactly, But I think there is some slight differences to the previous series, The animation seems to be whacked up a notch and the new opening is very good. I enjoyed that episode a lot anyway, I officially <3 SzS now.

Mmm, I definitely noticed a change in the animation. The company doing the animation production is the same as last season (SHAFT), so I guess they're just showing off an expanded budget?

Well folks, watched the first episode of this yesterday and although it's hardly anything like Welcome to the N.H.K. I still found it pretty damn enjoyable. A lot of random crap is written on those blackboards. Still, I can see that it's only going to get better from this point, so looking forward to watching the rest when I have the spare time. Seems like there's only twelve episodes in season one, so it won't take as long to watch as most other series' I've seen lately. Also, this is a nice change of pace from Claymore which I had previously watched, which is always nice.
