Vampire Ninja
I was maybe thinking of getting the Samurai x Deluxe complete collection. released by ADV films. Which contains: Trust, Betrayal, The motion picture and reflections. Only problem is i havent seen the Roruni Kenshin Series. I think theres 96 episodes or something like that.

What i want to know is do i need to know what happened in the series to know what happens in the samurai x boxset? Please someone help.

I believe the OVA's are set before and after Rurouni Kenshin. The motion picture is during, I think. As for needing to see the series first, I dont think it would really matter for Trust and Betrayal and I would assume for reflection you would need to see the main series first, but I stopped after seeing Trust and Betrayal as I did not like the OVA anywhere near as much as the series and consequentely did not see reflections nor the film. I believe the OVa's have a much more serious, darker tone.

Then again, in saying that, a friend of mine bought that set you were describing and highly enjoyed it, so maybe you do not need to see the series (as he had not...).

I also think the whole mess is quite confusing:p

Trust and Betrayal is a prequel which I think I saw a while ago and it didn't seem like any addtional knowledge of the series was required to understand it (though it might increase your enjoyment).

I never saw the series, but I thought it was excellent. I'd like to rewatch it sometime so I may consider this boxset myself.

The trust and betrayal OVA's are kenshin's past and are canon to the manga and set before the events of the TV series so it doesn't really matter if you have watched the TV series or not.

The reflection OVA however is a made up ending for the TV series, whilst containing one major character from the final arc of rurouni kenshin.

Overall though i wouldn't waste your time with the refelction OVA since it emits high levels of **** fumes.

 Can't be THAT bad can it? I intend to attempt watching the OVA's again after re-watching the series at christmas... I am planned all the way up to easter :p

I liked Reflection - a lot of people hate it because they made it instead of animating the huge last story in the manga. And it's sort of a departure from expectations.

I didn't like the movie much. It was pretty much an extended filler episode like most SJ movie adaptations.

The TV series is pretty good (at least, the first two sets of it), so if you can grab those from the US at some stage they're certainly worth the current economy box set prices!

As a Kenshin fanboy I must say the trust and betrayal OVA's are awesome an deserved a live action movie.

Reflection is also great, made me weep. I think that an animated Kenshin 2.0 with only the last arc of the story would do great. After the Kyoto arc, they messed the TV series big time, to the point only fanboys like me would bear... :/

I think it deserve the 12 quid amazon is asking for it anyway even if you're not a fan of the series.

A Great DVD set. Trust and betrayal are the back story so to speak. Reflection is very good, Kenshin fanboys tend to dislike because it ends differently to the manga.

Really? I'm a fanboy and I loved it. It gives closure to the Kenshin legend beautifully. I do feel a little betrayed as they didn't animated the last arc of the manga, which is ABSOLUTELY amazing - sorry for screaming, just got a bit excited over there =D
