Due to the pre-event announcements, there weren't too many surprises (in terms of new UK anime licenses) announced at this past weekend's London Expo, however ADV Films were able to confirm their intentions publish the following anime in the UK:

009-1, Innocent Venus, Kurau: Phantom Memory, Magikano, Pumpkin Scissors, Red Garden, The Wallflower and Utawarerumono. All of these series are being (or have been) released by ADV in North America too.

ADV also confirmed that they intend to offer certain anime as download-only to UK subscribers, completely forgoing any UK DVD releases; first up are Air Gear, Chance Pop Sessions and Comic Party Revolution. If this proves successful, more titles are expected to go this way - a major reason being that UK DVD releases are especially expensive because of restrictive BBFC submission fees (given the dual-language nature of most anime, any given DVD release must be submitted to the BBFC twice over, therefore UK anime publishers must pay twice the fee for certification).

Finally, Beez revealed that the first two volumes of .hack// Roots will be issued with limited editions, including two artboxes which will each hold half the series.

If you love cosplay, don't forget to check out our video of the London Expo, authored by our own jeremy1985.

I'll be picking up Red Garden, although it's strange that they didn't mention Welcome to the NHK. I hope that won't be a R1 only...

I am sure that Hugh did say they will be releasing Welcome to the NHK since I was a little surprised at that at the time since out of all of them this was the only one I was unaware had a UK licence.

This proves that the bbfc are total assholes, mandatory fee twice over only for them to cut it when the see fit?
Yeah, adhering to the law...how dare they?[/sarcasm]

Cheers for clearing things up on NHK, Gawyn. I couldnt see why it wouldn't be on the list with the others - as a general rule ADV's UK roll-call usually follows that of their USA one, with a few months delay.

Pfft...surely they could just save money by making everything dub-only! >_>

But then we would rampage, surely the more logical thing to do would make everything sub-only, but then we would still rampage. . .we need a choice.

So if everybody buys these direct download episodes then we might get the DVD's but nearly everybody wont bother with the DVD's when they finally get released because they already paid to download them.

In reality most people would just import from the US.

There are some limitations to the downloading (such as video/audio quality and expiry dates on the files) so I'm guessing they'll be used mainly for rental and promotional/preview purposes. It's a nice idea but the implimentation could use some ironing out.

I couldn't agree more, that's exactly what I said in the other thread.

I'm dead set against importing unless I really, really have to, but this is just going to drive me to import more and more. :?

A but cuts are where the pure genius of the BBFC comes in since (as I understand it at least) the newly cut video has to be passed by them again for them to certify it, meaning you would have to pay for it twice all over again. So, on top of having to edit the footage out of your masters and create new masters (which is probably not a cheap and easy process in the first instance), you also have to pay to have it submitted again. The true beauty in all of this is that is a legal requirement of business in order to be able to get product on the shelves. Thankfully the BBFC aren't quite as snip happy as they have been in the past but it is still somewhat beyond a joke.

Quite a few people were literally up be up in arms about this one, the BBFC did some horrendious cuts to the UK's Ren and Stimpy Seasons 1 & 2, they took out the song about hanging, saying that kids would imitate this and hang themselves, and the infamous man's best friend. In the US all this is there and was released as a adult box set, but over here, they fault that them two moments in Ren and Stimpy history were even too violent for a '18' rating. . .i mean come on. . .times haven't changed too much from the '90s till now, Have they?

They screwed off Paranoia Agent, ergo I think them of the ultabastard.

Yes, downloading TV and Films (including Anime) to PCs is never going to take off on the grounds people don't like to watch stuff on their PCs. There seems to be a perception among the industry that video downloading will take off in the in the same way music downloading has, without realising that whilst a lot of people do download fansubs/TV Shows/Movies they only do it because they're impatient and want to see things before it gets an official release. Not even gadgets to link people's PCs to their TV will change this. What ADV should be doing is following their US strategy and launching the Video on Demand version of the Anime Network. That way they still avoid the BBFC problem as TV is regulated by Ofcom, who work in a more reasonable way, even if they are stricter, but only about stuff that airs pre watershed or on childrens channels.

Besides, I don't think Ofcom have this strange irrational fear of suicide sequences that the BBFC do. Any regulatory body that gives Elfen Lied a 15, and then turns around and demands Ren & Stimpy be cut has a problem.

Their reasoning for the Ren and Stimpy thing was that the show is aimed at kids. In my opinion it's never really been aimed at kids and all the target audience now are in their 20's or more.
