It's old, it's dub only and it's basically a retelling of the original Macross series. Unfortunately, it's also the nearest you can get to Macross unless you import the series on region 1. Macross is a classic though, so Robotech isn't a bad buy if you can find it cheap.
 
If you can stomach old animation and cheesey 80's voices and dialogue, then by all means give it a shot. Bear in mind though, that while the Macross Saga is a pretty complete story in it's own right, for the full and complete Robotech story, you'll have to get the other series too - The Masters and New Generation (reworked versions of Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada respectively).

Personally, I'd suggest importing one of the R1 Super Dimension Fortress Macross boxsets instead, but this is pretty good value if you just want to get the gist of the story.
