One of my all time favourite movies. I already have it though; waiting for blu-ray to buy it again...

Utena is one of these series/franchises that has almost completely passed me by over the years. I'm definitely interested in seeing it at some point, but would you say that I could watch this movie without having seen the series? I know it's a loose re-telling of the same story, but I still wonder...

I've seen the series, but never seem the movie. The series is definitely worth it. Not sure it's your cup of tea though Paul, considering the stuff you like and all...

It's vaguely a retelling so doesn't presume knowledge of the series and directly contradicts many events, so if it's the kind of thing you like I think it's possible to enjoy it without the TV show. Similarly it doesn't really spoil the TV show drastically if you see that afterwards even though the characters and themes are similar. You have to have an extremely open mind though. I've shown it to many friends who have ended up just being frustrated by some of the weird events and ambiguities and ended up not wanting to see more.

If you've seen the series it makes a lot more sense and a lot of the nods will be more obvious, but even if you have there's still a chance you won't always know what's going on without watching it a few times. I watched it three times the week I bought it, then again with the commentary (something I never do). Somehow, it resonated with me.

You should watch the TV show if you can though. I like the movie more for being able to get a concentrated fix of Utena in a couple of hours, but the TV series is wonderful as well. Very girly and very artsy. Knowledge of the "full story" makes some of the apparently throwaway scenes in the movie that little bit more poignant.

Tell me, why is this geting released before the actaul series?

I hope to christ that the licencing of the show does not rest on this doing well, cuz it won't and we'll be out of another series (making for at least three for MVM).
