Review: Paranoia Agent #1

I've posted my review of the first volume of Satoshi Kon's (director of Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers) eagerly awaited series Paranoia Agent; four mind bending episodes of psychologic terror! Out now in the UK courtesy of MVM.
Satoshi Kon is fast establishing himself as one of the world's greatest animation directors and with Paranoia Agent, he has done it again! However, this is certainly not a series for the weak of heart as it takes an unflinching and frankly disturbing look at human nature. This first volume is at times euphoric and surreal as it weaves the type of thought provoking and complex thriller that only Kon can produce, but also offers several moments of intense psychological horror; it ultimately makes for disturbing yet compulsive viewing!

This series looks stunning, I've always been a huge fan of Kon's work and am delighted to hear Paranoia Agent is as good as I was hoping. Fingers crossed my LE will arrive tomorrow and I can reacquaint myself with this most reverred of auteurs. :)

Excellent review mate. I actually read that before registering for the forums today, and off the back of that review I went out and purchased the complete boxed set from playusa.com this afternoon.

Looking forward to getting my grubby mits on it as it really does sound awesome.
Seen a couple of Kon's previous bits in the form of Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress and really enjoyed both so if PA is anything along those lines I guess I'll be lovin every minute of it.

Have you actually seen the whole series Paul?

Thanks for the compliments, it's great to hear you found the review useful! :)

I've only seen the first four episodes of Paranoia Agent, but that was easily enough to convince me that this show is something quite special. I'd liken it more to Perfect Blue than Millenium Actress, since PA shares with Perfect Blue Kon's use of unsettling hallucinations and such surreal imagery.

Out of all the project Satoshi Kon has been involved with, I'd rate Magnetic Rose (the first short movie from "Memories") as my favourite. He only wrote the script for this but his talent is evident through out, add to this some unforgetable and amazing science fiction animation and a soundtrack by Yoko Kanno and you have a 40-minute masterpiece. More people need to see Magnetic Rose.

excellent review - pretty much summed up my thoughts on the series, which i have found to be absolutely superb so far. Magentic Rose from Memories (which reminds me of Stanley Kubrik's stuff with 2001, oddly enough) and his feature-length Perfect Blue are definitely worth watching as well.

I really enjoyed Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress for that matter so I'm very much looking forward to seeing the latest piece from Kon. I had a look at the reviews posted on another site which only deals with R1 discs and they were all A or A+ so thanks for the tip off, this show relly does look like it's gonna rock. HARD!

As for Memories, I haven't watched it yet. I have it at home so once I get back on Thursday I may set aside a couple of hours and take it in. I'll let you know how I get on. ;)
